Small Town Secrets Haunt ‘The Confession’ Premiere
Every small town carries its stories, but in Will Canon’s new feature The Confession, those stories fester into something far darker. Making its debut at this year’s FrightFest in London, the film reimagines the legend of the Pied Piper against the backdrop of rural Texas, exposing a family history bound up in violence, secrecy and supernatural menace.

Italia Ricci leads the cast as Naomi, a struggling musician who returns to her childhood home with her young son, Dylan. While unpacking the remnants of her father’s life, she stumbles upon an unsettling recording in which he confesses to a brutal murder. The revelation would be disturbing enough, but his claim that he acted to protect himself from a mysterious evil force raises deeper questions. As Naomi begins to notice her son’s increasingly troubling behaviour, the roots of her family’s past intertwine with the sinister folklore of her hometown.
Canon, who last appeared at FrightFest with Demonic in 2015, directs from his own script, with Rosanna Eden-Ellis producing under her Five by Five banner. The film reunites Canon with actor Scott Mechlowicz, who plays Grayson, after their earlier collaboration on Demonic. Rising talent Zachary Golinger portrays Dylan, following acclaimed turns in Barry and The Crowded Room, while veteran performer Terence Rosemore takes on the role of Harling, adding to a career that spans Candyman 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Vols. 2 & 3, and True Detective.

The Confession also boasts cinematography from John W. Rutland, whose previous credits include Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and the Netflix hit Sierra Burgess is a Loser. The supporting cast features a blend of seasoned names and newer talent, underscoring Canon’s commitment to pairing strong performances with an unnerving concept.
Screening on 22 August at the ODEON Luxe West End, for Canon, The Confession represents both a return to the festival and a further exploration of supernatural storytelling, this time rooted in an American gothic sensibility that transforms rural landscapes into haunted ground.
