The Confession (2025) Review

The Confession, the latest film written and directed by Will Canon (who previously helmed FrightFest favourite, Demonic, back in 2015) is a thrilling tale of past secrets unravelling in a most haunting way. The action, as it transpires, is inspired by a certain town in Germany named Hamlin, and a dark legend we all know well.

The Confession 2025

In Texas-based, seasoned but jaded musician (played by Italia Ricci) has become a widow and returns to her secluded childhood abode with her son, in her home town, in California. Her plan is to find inspiration for her faltering musical career. The house is full of memories and is mired in tragedy, and although the death of her father still looms large, she hopes that the worst is firmly behind them as she tries to move on. But when she uncovers some old recordings, strange things start happening. Those closest to her, especially her son, seems to be tagetted. As dark secrets start unravelling in a fast-paced fashion, she faces a race against time to save her son and uncover the secrets.

Central to these goings-on are twisted elements of the fairytale of the Pied Piper of Hamlin. This narrative is twisted, which is what separates The Confession from similar films, which take from their particular legend – meaning that here it is handled in quite a fresh fashion, with the tale not taking over, but instead, adding an extra nuance to proceedings.

There are some genuinely tense and creepy moments set at the family home. A series of macabre and mysterious activities threaten to bring out secrets buried from the past, and as with all good secrets, they have a habit of escaping – no matter what. This when the true chaos starts and things fully unfold, entanglig all those contained within.

The Confession 2025

The ending of The Confession is both chilling and unexpected. It managers to turn things on their head – for the better – and this makes for a very welcome, refreshing change. This is particularly important subject matter that it is dealt with throughout the film, and leaves you reeling with what you witness. This is where the power of The Confession lies.

The Confession is an utterly watchable and compelling horror movie. Although it has an simple plot initially – one that might seem all-too-familiar at first, with a whodunnit vibe about it – it flows quickly and succinctly. Best of all, it has plenty of twists and turns along the way, and a huge amount of shock value.
