‘The Red Mask’ Unveils Modern Slasher at FrightFest 2025
FrightFest’s long tradition of introducing new horror titles continues this year with the world premiere of The Red Mask, screening on 23 August at the ODEON Luxe West End.

The film is directed by Ritesh Gupta, whose previous work has earned Emmy nominations and international advertising awards, and features Helena Howard (Madeline’s Madeline, The Wilds), Inanna Sarkis (After We Collided), Jake Abel (The Lovely Bones, Percy Jackson) and Kelli Garner (The Aviator, Godzilla: King of the Monsters). It is produced by Atit Shah (Remember Me), Aimee Schoof and Isen Robbins (Queen of the Ring).
The Red Mask centres on Allina Green, an independent screenwriter tasked with reviving a cult 1980s slasher franchise. In an attempt to immerse herself in the material, she and her fiancée Deetz isolate themselves in a remote cabin. Events take a darker turn when the screenplay begins to change unexpectedly and two strangers arrive claiming to have booked the same location. As the situation escalates, Allina is forced to confront both the legacy of the slasher and her own role within it.

The production incorporates themes of toxic fandom and cultural ownership, as well as elements of queer identity and contemporary online discourse. Alongside its central cast, the film includes appearances from popular digital creators within the horror community such as James A. Janisse and Chelsea Rebecca of Dead Meat, Mykie, Carly King and UK-based commentator BigFatCult.
Speaking about the project, producer Atit Shah highlighted its focus on exploring the relationship between horror fans and the stories they invest in. Gupta described the film as his most personal work to date, positioning it as both a homage and an interrogation of the slasher form.

The premiere of The Red Mask adds to FrightFest’s roster of international genre titles, continuing the festival’s role as a platform for both established filmmakers and new voices.
