‘Harbinger’ Puts a Sinister Spin on British Occult Horror

British horror has never been short of cursed objects, haunted houses or sinister relics, but this summer it welcomes an altogether more unusual villain. Harbinger, the latest supernatural thriller from director James Crow, introduces a malevolent fortune-telling machine possessed by the spirit of a satanic serial killer, with the occult chiller arriving on UK digital platforms and Blu-ray from 10 August.

Released by Miracle Media and Shogun Films, Harbinger blends supernatural horror with old-fashioned gore, centring on a fairground attraction that becomes the vessel for an evil determined to return to the living.

The film stars Jeanine Nerissa Sothcott as Julia, the sole survivor of notorious murderer Henry Decker, played by Peter Woodward. Five years after escaping Decker’s killing spree, Julia continues to struggle with the psychological scars of her ordeal while living with her mother, portrayed by Doctor Who legend Carole Ann Ford. Believing she may finally be able to confront her past, she agrees to appear on a paranormal television programme hosted by Mike Craggs, played by Gary Webster.

The investigation takes the crew back to the house where Decker’s reign of terror ended. Alongside ghost hunters, psychics, occult specialists and a television production team, Julia discovers an abandoned fortune-telling machine known as the Harbinger. Rather than offering harmless predictions, the machine begins revealing the grisly fate awaiting each member of the group.

As the deaths mount, Julia uncovers the horrifying truth. Decker’s soul has become trapped within the machine, and the killer requires six more souls before he can once again walk the earth.

Crow, whose previous directing work includes Nightmare on 34th Street and Nightmare on 34th Street Part II, continues his exploration of independent British horror with a project that combines supernatural folklore, occult mythology and practical effects. Before moving behind the camera, Crow established himself as a screenwriter on features including GBH (Riot), He Who Dares and Allies, gradually building a career across action and horror productions.

The screenplay comes from Harry Boxley and Simon Cluett. Boxley has become a prolific writer within contemporary independent horror, with credits including Mary Had a Little Lamb, Cinderella’s Curse, Popeye’s Revenge and Mouseboat Massacre. Cluett, meanwhile, has also worked on Insomniac, The Diabolical Doctor Montague and Knightfall.

Alongside Sothcott, Woodward, Webster and Ford, the cast includes Tony Sands, Johnny Palmiero and Nick Nevern. It’s an interesting mix of familiar British genre faces and television talent, giving the production a distinctly home-grown identity without losing sight of its supernatural premise.

Harbinger arrives on UK digital platforms and Blu-ray on 10 August 2026 from Miracle Media, with a US digital release following on 11 August.
