Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Glasgow 2024

As the chill of winter gradually recedes, the cinematic landscape of Glasgow is set to ignite with the fiery spirit of storytelling and creativity. The Pigeon Shrine FrightFest, a beacon for the bold and the imaginative, is all geared up to cast its spell at the Glasgow Film Festival from March 7th to March 9th, 2024. Celebrating its 19th year, FrightFest continues to be a sanctuary where the thrill of horror and the allure of fantasy converge.

Nestled in the hallowed halls of the Glasgow Film Theatre, this year’s festival is more than just a gathering; it’s a vibrant mosaic of global creativity, featuring twelve films from eight countries across three continents, including two world and eight UK premieres. As festival co-director Alan Jones eloquently states, “The essence of cinema is timeless, weaving together the fabric of audiovisual marvels. GFF and FrightFest stand as testaments to this enduring magic, fostering a community where cinematic wonders know no limits.”

You Will Never Find Me

Day 1: March 7th – The Enigma Unfolds

The festival unfurls its dark tapestry with the UK premiere of You’ll Never Find Me. This directorial venture by Josiah Allen & Indianna Bell from Australia introduces us to a gripping narrative where isolation meets desperation, embodied brilliantly by Jordan Cowan & Brendan Rock. As a storm rages outside, two solitary souls within a desolate caravan park find their lives intertwined in a tale of suspense and unforeseen terror.

Day 2: March 8th – A Labyrinth of Horrors

The mystery film that opens the second day is shrouded in secrecy, promising an exhilarating start. Soon after, the depths of terror are explored in Mathieu Turi’s The Deep Dark. This creature feature, crowned with awards, invites you on a harrowing journey through the historic coal mines of Northern France, where a bloodthirsty mutant lurks in the shadows of a collapsed mine.

But not all monsters are visible; Mike Hermosa’s The Invisible Raptor brings a new dimension to terror. This UK premiere merges wit with splatter, presenting a genetically engineered and invisible predator on a rampage in Spielburgh County. The day culminates with RKSS’s Wake Up, a unique spin on the slasher genre. Watch as a group of youthful activists confronts a nightmarish reality within the aisles of a home superstore, where environmental activism meets primal horror.

Day 3: March 9th – The Crescendo of Fears

The World premiere of Mom marks the dawn of the third day. Emily Hampshire delivers a riveting performance in this psychological horror, portraying the descent into darkness of a mother haunted by the loss of her child. Next, The Funeral by Orcun Behram makes its Scottish debut, presenting a macabre narrative of love and the undead set against the backdrop of a lone hearse driver’s haunting journey.

In the spotlight next is Custom, marking Tiago Teixeira’s anticipated debut. A tale of arthouse pornographers entangled with a mysterious client, this film weaves a web of death, desire, and deception. As the evening draws in, Federico Zampaglione’s The Well plunges us into a supernatural chiller starring Lauren LaVera, where a medieval painting restoration beckons an ancient curse.

The Well

All You Need is Death further intensifies the evening with its UK premiere. This unsettling folk horror, reminiscent of Ben Wheatley’s early work, presents a darkly woven narrative of ethnomusicology and an ancient, taboo ballad. The festival’s grand finale, Last Straw, directed by Alan Scott Neal, presents a diner-invasion thriller that marries hard-hitting action with timely social commentary.
