Five FrightFest Facts From Molo Alcocer Délano writer of The Exorcism of Carmen Farías

2021 has been a strange year and although things may not have completely returned to normality one thing to be thankful for is the return of the Arrow Video FrightFest which takes place for real this year at Cineworld, Leicester Square in central London.

The annual five-day four-screen 50+ film extravaganza runs between 26th and 30th August and after a year online, it is wonderful to have FrightFest back with a hybrid event featuring in-cinema and online components bringing audiences a whole host of truly terrifying and terrific horror films.

Below we feature one of those monstrously amazing movies with our regular exclusive interview feature Five FrightFest Facts From and these five are from Molo Alcocer Délano writer of The Exorcism of Carmen Farías:

1. Tell us about your film?
The story is a mixture of several stories I heard as a kid growing up in Querétaro, a small town in the center of Mexico. Exorcisms are still practiced in the world, and in Querétaro, where there is a special parish that serves as a training facility for exorcists. What ignited the story was that once, as I was walking my dog, I could hear screaming down the street. It was not a normal scream, as I walked closer, I could see a priest walking out the door with a man and a woman, the screaming became clearer and it dawned on me that what was going on inside was an exorcism – whatever that means in our society nowadays. It was evident that this is something that’s still going on, and this one was right around the corner from where I live. The Exorcism of Carmen Farías is a film we are very proud of. Since we started developing the script, we had a very clear image of what we wanted at the end of the road. The film is very ambitious from a technical standpoint. We needed a really strong team to pull through. We had little time, limited resources and high standards in a complicated location on top of a mountain, so the margin of error was narrow. Post production was complicated, since there were a lot of elements to consider. Thankfully, we had an incredible team.

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
I’ve always loved horror films. Since I was a kid I’d watch horror films, I loved the thrill and the experience of being frightened by a movie. The first horror film I ever saw (purposefully) was “The Shinning”. I loved the experience of talking about to kids my age, watching them get scared as I was telling them the story.

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
The Omen. Always good to have a classic and this one seems fitting.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
Best horror short. I’ve had some experience with horror short films and I think they are extremely challenging, the buildup, execution and payoff have to be very accurate for it to work. Tension has to be built in less time.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
A film about a man who is trapped in a haunted hotel and can never get out. Starred by Richard Burghi.

The Exorcism of Carmen Farías plays FRIDAY 27TH AUGUST 2021- 3.30 & 3.55 PM Find our more and book your tickets HERE
