‘The Whisper Man’ Sets August Release with Star-Studded Cast
Netflix has unveiled the first official details for The Whisper Man, confirming a global release date of 28 August alongside an initial look at the crime thriller adaptation of Alex North’s bestselling novel.

Directed by James Ashcroft, the film centres on a widowed crime writer whose young son is abducted, forcing him to reconnect with his estranged father, a retired police detective. As the search unfolds, the case begins to mirror elements of a decades-old investigation involving a convicted serial killer known as ‘The Whisper Man’, drawing the family into a wider and more complex mystery.
Robert De Niro heads the cast, marking another collaboration between the actor and the streaming platform, with Michelle Monaghan and Adam Scott also taking leading roles. Scott portrays Tom Kennedy, the father at the centre of the story, while Monaghan’s role has not been detailed in the announcement. The supporting cast includes Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto and Will Brill.

The project is produced by Anthony and Joe Russo through their AGBO banner, alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco and Kassee Whiting. The Russo brothers secured the rights to North’s novel in 2018, prior to its publication, with Netflix joining the production in 2022. The screenplay is adapted by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer.
Filming took place in New Jersey, beginning in April 2025 and wrapping in early June of the same year. Ashcroft, whose previous work includes adaptations of Owen Marshall’s short stories, directs the feature as part of a growing slate of literary adaptations for the streamer.

North’s original novel, published in 2019, follows a similar premise, focusing on the psychological impact of child abduction and the legacy of violent crime across generations. The book achieved commercial success and was widely circulated following its release, leading to early interest from studios.
The Whisper Man continues Netflix’s investment in high-profile thriller projects anchored by established talent, with De Niro’s involvement forming a key part of the film’s positioning.
The film will be available to stream globally on Netflix from 28 August 2026. We’ll share more news and the trailer when it comes.
