‘Stranger Things’ Finale Pulls In Millions as Fans Flood Cinemas
Netflix’s long-running genre hit Stranger Things has closed its story with an unexpected theatrical success, as audiences turned out in large numbers to experience the series finale on cinema screens over the New Year period. According to sources cited by Variety, movie theatres generated between $25 million and $28 million by screening the final episode, a rare box office boost for episodic television content.

The finale, which ran close to two hours, was presented in cinemas across major chains in the US, with ticket pricing varying widely depending on the circuit. Some exhibitors bundled admission with food and drink credits, while others opted for lower flat-rate pricing designed to encourage turnout. The approach appears to have paid off, with the Duffer Brothers revealing via social media that around 1.1 million vouchers were sold for the event. AMC alone reported taking in $15 million from more than 753,000 customers purchasing concession credits, accounting for just over a third of participating locations.
The results come at a welcome moment for exhibitors, who ended 2025 with domestic ticket sales of roughly $8.9 billion, only a modest rise on the previous year and still well short of pre-pandemic highs. While theatrical releases such as Avatar: Fire and Ash and Marty Supreme helped stabilise the market, the success of Stranger Things in cinemas points to alternative programming models that could supplement traditional film releases during peak periods.
The relationship between Netflix and theatre chains has historically been complex, with exhibitors often wary of the streamer’s release strategies. However, the strong performance of the finale appears to have opened new lines of communication. AMC chief Adam Aron said the company was encouraged by the collaboration and confirmed that discussions were already underway regarding additional Netflix titles receiving theatrical playdates.

Created by the Duffer Brothers, Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and grew into one of Netflix’s most valuable properties, blending genre influences with a young cast that became household names. The fifth and final season was released in three parts, with the concluding episode dropping on New Year’s Eve. The cast included Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo and Sadie Sink, among others.
Though it’s still early days to make comparisons of the success of Season 5 in comparison to other Netflix shows, Season 4 of Stranger Things does stand as the platform’s second most popular show, just behind Wednesday Season 1.
While Netflix declined to comment on the theatrical earnings, the turnout suggests that select event-style screenings could offer a viable way for streamers and cinemas to coexist, particularly for finales and specials with built-in fan demand. For theatres seeking to diversify programming and for platforms eager to expand cultural impact beyond the living room, the Upside Down’s farewell may prove influential.
