Netflix’s ‘Mercy For None’ to Deliver Brutal Justice

Netflix has released the official trailer and key art for Mercy For None, a new South Korean noir action series fronted by So Ji-sub, marking his return to the genre after more than a decade. Set to debut on 6 June, the series centres on a former gangster forced back into the criminal world he once violently escaped, now propelled by the death of his younger brother and a mission to uncover the truth behind it.

Mercy for None

So Ji-sub stars as Nam Ki-jun, once a feared figure in the underworld who famously severed his own Achilles tendon to leave that life behind. Eleven years later, he returns following the suspicious death of his brother Ki-seok (played in flashbacks by Lee Jun-hyuk), who had risen to a leadership role within their former organisation. The trailer opens at Ki-seok’s funeral, immediately establishing a tone of controlled grief and cold resolve. Ki-jun’s return is not welcomed, and the footage hints at the extent to which his past has remained volatile in his absence.

The trailer reveals a stripped-down, focused approach to action. Armed with a baseball bat rather than firearms, Ki-jun is shown moving through narrow alleys and confined rooms, taking down enemies in close quarters. The action is raw, unglamorous and deliberate, underscoring a central theme of persistence over spectacle. Key moments in the trailer also highlight the presence of multiple power players who may be connected to Ki-seok’s death, including corrupt prosecutors, criminal heirs and veteran kingpins.

Supporting cast members include Huh Joon-ho, Gong Myoung, Choo Young Woo, An Kil-kang, Tiger Lee and Cho Han-cheul. Cha Seung-won appears in a guest role as a shadowy underworld figure monitoring Ki-jun’s return, while Lee Jun-hyuk features in key moments from the past, building the emotional stakes around the brothers’ relationship.

Director and writer details have yet to be officially confirmed, but the visual direction is steeped in noir stylings. The key art released alongside the trailer features So Ji-sub’s character standing alone amid bloodied bodies, with stark lighting and heavy contrast reinforcing the show’s bleak tone.

The series promises a tightly contained story with a defined moral framework: no forgiveness, no negotiation. Characters are introduced as morally compromised, each chasing their own version of power, justice or legacy. Whether through political influence, street dominance or familial allegiance, they are all drawn into the orbit of Ki-jun’s pursuit.

Mercy For None premieres globally on 6 June, exclusively on Netflix.
