Five FrightFest Facts with Eric Barrett of ‘Scared to Death’
Pigeon Shrine FrightFest Glasgow audiences were treated to a séance gone horribly wrong this weekend as Scared to Death made its International Premiere on Saturday 8th March. Produced by Eric Barrett and directed by Paul Boyd, this comedy-horror hybrid blends Hollywood satire, supernatural terror, and pitch-black humour, all wrapped up in a delightfully sinister premise.
Starring Lin Shaye, Bill Moseley, and Rae Dawn Chong, Scared to Death follows an ambitious young filmmaker who convinces his cast and crew to attend a real séance in the abandoned children’s shelter where they’re shooting their latest horror film. But what begins as a quirky publicity stunt soon descends into a nightmare, as the ghosts of long-dead orphans – and something far worse – come out to play.
Prior to its sensational screening, we sat down with experienced producer Eric Barrett to talk career pivots, the challenge of balancing horror and comedy, and why Timothée Chalamet should play him in a horror biopic…
Eric Barrett, Producer
1. Tell us about your film
Scared To Death is about a group of filmmakers who are making a movie involving a seance. As research for their film, they decide to have a real seance in the location where they are filming. That’s their first mistake.
2. How did you get into making movies?
When I went to college I had every intention of studying law. My second year I took a film course and decided to pivot. The jury is still out on if that was the wisest move! (Pun intended.)
3. What films would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
I think the films that are screened at FrightFest are amazing! The programming features premiers and films from all over. I wouldn’t touch a thing here.
4. If you could create your own award to give at FrightFest, what would it be and why?
I’m selfish on this one. I think there should be an award for Best Comedy Horror. This is a tough genre and to be able to crack both genres in one film is quite a feat!
5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
The Plumber, starring Timothée Chalamet. I figure if he can play Bob Dylan, he can play me!
