Five FrightFest Facts with Brea Grant of ‘MLM’
As Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024 enters its final day, audiences are still buzzing about the unique and unsettling films that have premiered throughout the festival. One short film that is set to leave a lasting impression is MLM, directed by the talented Brea Grant. Screening on Monday, August 26th, this short takes the concept of multi-level marketing and spins it into a dark and twisted horror tale. The film stars Jessika Van, Courtney Pauroso and horror fan favourite – Barbara Crampton.

We caught up with Brea Grant to discuss the inspiration behind MLM, her journey into filmmaking, and her thoughts on the FrightFest experience.
Brea Grant, director
1. Tell us about your film
Brea Grant: MLM is about a woman who gets involved in a pyramid scheme that goes horribly wrong when she can’t meet her quotas.

2. How did you get into making movies?
Brea Grant: I started as a supremely lucky actress who ended up in a lot of films and television. I’ve always liked horror and found a great community in the genre world after appearing in a few horror films. From there, I wrote a film that I directed in 2013 and have continued to work behind the camera ever since.
3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
Brea Grant: Let’s Scare Jessica to Death – I would love to see this on a big screen.

4. If you could create your own award to give at FrightFest, what would it be and why?
Brea Grant: Shortest Feature – I really would like movies to be shorter these days.
5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
Brea Grant: Not Enough Snacks in My Purse, starring myself.
Brea Grant’s MLM is a standout short at this year’s FrightFest, starring blending horror and dark humour in a way that only she can. As the festival comes to a close, MLM serves as a reminder of the innovative storytelling and unique perspectives that FrightFest continues to champion. Keep an eye on this short—it’s a chilling reminder that sometimes, the scariest monsters are hiding in plain sight.
