Horror Favourites – Marcos Mereles
Premiering to critical acclaim at the London Film Festival, Marcos Mereles’ satirical, genre-defying ALL IS VANITY explores the egos and idiosyncrasies of a fashion shoot gone wrong. We managed to grab the director for a quick chat about his favourite scary movie.
An eccentric photographer (Sid Phoenix), his eager assistant (Yaseen Aroussi), a jaded make-up artist (Rosie Steel) and a bored model (Isabelle Bontrer) gather for a fashion shoot in a London warehouse. But when one of their number disappears, events take a turn for the bizarre.
With stylish cinematography and standout performances from a talented cast of rising stars, Mereles’ debut feature is beautifully designed and shot, making elegant use of a single location and multiple narrative threads. Wildly inventive and entertaining, ALL IS VANITY marks out writer-director Marcos Mereles as one to watch.
Below Marcos talks to us about his favourite horror film:
“For me, David Lynch’s ERASERHEAD (1977) is experiencing true horror through the eyes of the main character.
In this film, Lynch has created a terrifying atmosphere with a striking cinematography and a beautiful (yet unsettling) score and sound design that doesn’t allow the audience to get comfort at any moment.
The director takes you into an unpredictable nightmarish journey that progressively spirals down in a surreal way, where neither the main character nor the audience can escape – just endure.
With ERASERHEAD, Lynch introduces his personal style with sheer confidence. This bold approach was an extremely valuable lesson for me as a filmmaker, it taught me to put the audience first, take bold creative choices and own them, and to be brave when discovering my voice and telling my stories.”
ALL IS VANITY is released in cinemas and digital 14th October. Check out this clip below
