Cruel Love is the final film completed by German-American actor and producer Christian Oliver. Oliver finished his work on December 20, 2023. He died on January 4, 2024, in a plane crash off Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, with his daughters Madita and Annik. He was 51. The film is dedicated to his memory.

He and director Nick Lyon first worked together on Hercules Reborn in 2014. Cruel Love was their fifth collaboration — after Hercules Reborn, Christmas in Vienna, D-Day: Battle of Omaha Beach, and English Estate — and the first they produced together, after years of talking about a bigger partnership.

In Cruel Love he plays Ivan, a charismatic man whose romance with Julia Thomas (Elisabeth Harnois) turns darker as questions about his identity surface. Bai Ling, Ricco Ross, and Ken Davitian co-star.

Star of The Crow, Nixon, Red Corner, Crank: High Voltage, Wild Wild West, Anna and the King, Southland Tales, and Maximum Impact, as well as TV shows Entourage and Lost, Bai Ling said of her new film: “I loved this movie, Cruel Love. Our director, Nick, did a fantastic job. His vision is so powerful. He captured a very real story of the world we live in today — a story that deeply touches you and makes you feel both happy and sad. I have to say, with the character Mei Li I portrayed , I intentionally took her to the extreme. She is either fire or ice, so dangerous she threatening you with every move she makes.”

“I also loved working with our director. Nick knows exactly what he wants within his vision. At the same time, he gives me complete freedom while keeping everything so precisely under his control. That dynamic challenges actors to be completely present and precise in every moment, while also allowing us the freedom to be romantically and creatively spontaneous. Working with Christian was a joy. He was so gentle and subtle, completely dedicated to this film and to his character. His skill is so refined that you almost don’t notice what he is doing — and yet everything feels incredibly real, sensitive, subtle, and natural. I’m so proud of this film and so grateful to have been part of it. I can’t wait for you to experience Cruel Love.”

Below the brilliant Bai Ling talks about a horror movie close to her heart:

“My favorite horror movie is called: Dumplings . A shocking powerful Hong Kong Horror movie, and it happened to star Bai Ling, and I won an Asian Oscar for my performance, even Quentin Tarantino pulled me aside at an event and said: “Bai Ling, your performance blew me away, what a brilliant actress you are. I loved your character so much in Dumplings. ” Well, humbly I would say, you will say the same about my performance in my new movie Cruel Love.”
