Five FrightFest Facts From Derek Dennis Herbert director of To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story

1. Tell us about your film?
Derek Dennis Herbert: To Hell and Back: The Kane Hodder Story is the story of horror icon, actor, and stuntman, Kane Hodder. Every fan knows him as powerful killer Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise, but what they may not know is that he was bullied as a child and burned severely in a fire stunt gone horribly wrong. The film takes an in-depth look at the man behind the mask, to reveal a truly inspirational human-interest story which fans will love!

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
Derek Dennis Herbert: Since first being scared by Jaws, I have been an avid horror fan and knew I would make movies. When I read Kane’s deep and impactful book, I knew I had to be the one to tell his story on the big screen. Along with my amazing Producer, Andrew Barcello, we formed Masterfully Macabre Entertainment, got Kane enthusiastically on board, and are excited about the future!

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
Derek Dennis Herbert: Other than the World Premiere of our film To Hell and Back at FrightFest and Hatchet on the big screen as part of its 10th anniversary celebration, I would love to have seen It screened. It looks like it will be a great horror film that respects the original source material and will be terrifying. Overall, the line-up of FrightFest is very impressive and I am looking forward to seeing many films while I’m there.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
Derek Dennis Herbert: I would create the Craven Icon Award, which could be given out to someone who has had an iconic impact on the horror genre, just like Wes Craven did on the genre.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
Derek Dennis Herbert: I have had horrible dating experiences (like many people in today’s world can probably relate to.) Therefore, if my life was very loosely made into a horror film, it would be called Don’t Swipe Right, and would star James Corden. It would be the story of a nice guy that finds himself getting deeper and deeper into horrible experiences with the people he goes on dates with. One person may make him commit a crime, while another may keep him hostage for several months. It would be the twisted tale of one man getting tortured through trying to find happiness.
