Sane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror (2025) Review

From humble roots in a small attic space of a London theatre to worldwide cult phenomenon, Sane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror explores the surprising path of rock musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show as told through the voices of the cast, crew and loyal fans who were intrinsic in making the sensation what it was, is and will continue to be.

Sane Inside Insanity: The Phenomenon of Rocky Horror

I was first introduced to The Rocky Horror Picture Show as an awkward goth kid in the early 2000s. My friend group of fellow misfits and weirdos felt it was time for me to experience this right of passage, and it was to be a night I would remember for a very long time.

Everyone has their own story of first finding ‘Rocky Horror’. For many, it is more than just a movie or stage show. It’s a sense of belonging and acceptance for who you are in a world that seeks to push us apart. Sane Inside Insanity explores the personal connections forged in the midnight shadows of individuals from all walks of life who together embody the notion of ‘Don’t Dream It, Be It’.

A look behind the curtain (and under the pounds of make up worn by leading man Tim Curry), this documentary is a uniquely personal look at the meteoric rise of the undeniably world changing phenomenon that is Rocky Horror. From a low budget, rock musical homage to the sci-fi movies of yesteryear with a modern gender bending vibe, Rocky Horror was and continues to be lightyears ahead of its time.

The film doesn’t shy away from the darker side lingering beneath the glamour. The harsh reality is that many involved in Rocky Horror found themselves financially cast aside when large Hollywood studios and producers got involved. A post credits note indicates that Richard O’Brien declined to participate in the making of the documentary, and having watched the film it’s sadly clear to see why. One can only hope that O’Brien finds some peace in the fact that he has undoubtedly made the world sparkle a little brighter.

What started as UK sensation turned Hollywood flop, suddenly found itself rock(y) solid thanks to the love of the fans who have firmly cemented the phenomena’s cult status. Fifty years later the production is still a regular fixture on the stage, attracting new generations of misfits to don their corsets and fishnet tights and excitedly yell loving obscenities with glee.

I am sad that I missed the madness at the stratospheric heights of the late seventies and eighties, but the intimate recollections of those involved help bring it to life.

Fans will love hearing the cherished memories of cast and crew, including the unfortunate cancellation of the final stage performance in the original venue due to an unlucky incident involving a piece of glitter and Rocky’s penis.

As new audiences continue to discover the wild and untamed thing that is ‘Rocky Horror’, ‘Sane Inside Insanity’ provides an honest reflection on the tight laced legacy that will make you want to smile until your face aches.
