‘Slither’ Crawls Back Into Cinemas For 20th Anniversary
Two decades after its original release, Slither is heading back into UK cinemas alongside a new 4K digital release, giving James Gunn’s cult horror-comedy another run on the big screen from 1 May.

The 2006 film marked Gunn’s directorial debut and stars Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks and Michael Rooker. Set in a small South Carolina town, the story follows an alien parasite that begins infecting residents, transforming them into grotesque hosts as it spreads.
While Slither struggled commercially on release, taking just over $12 million worldwide against its production budget, it was met with a strong critical response. The film currently holds an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics highlighting its mix of practical effects, dark humour and clear affection for classic genre filmmaking.

Over time, the film has built a loyal following, particularly as Gunn’s profile has grown through projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad. For many viewers, Slither remains an early example of his style, blending horror with comedy while drawing on influences including David Cronenberg’s work and 1980s creature features.
The cast also includes Gregg Henry and Tania Saulnier, with supporting appearances from Jenna Fischer and a cameo by Troma co-founder Lloyd Kaufman. Rob Zombie provides a voice role in the film, adding another genre connection to the production.
The anniversary re-release has been restored from the original 35mm interpositive and approved by Gunn alongside director of photography Gregory Middleton. In addition to the cinema screenings and digital release, a limited edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray SteelBook is set to arrive on 18 May.

At the time of its original release, Slither also picked up recognition within the horror community, winning a Fangoria Chainsaw Award for Highest Body Count and being named Best Feature Film of the Year by Rue Morgue magazine.
With tickets going on sale and the trailer back in circulation, audiences will have another chance to revisit the film in cinemas or upgrade their home collection. Check out the trailer and see how Slither holds up 20 years on.
