‘The Card Player’ Deals a New Hand With 4K Release

Long before livestreams and true crime dominated screens, Dario Argento imagined a killer who turned murder into interactive entertainment. More than two decades after its original release, The Card Player is returning in a newly restored 4K edition, bringing one of the Italian filmmaker’s most technology-driven thrillers back into the spotlight on 10 August.

Released by Shameless Films on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and digital platforms, the 2004 giallo arrives in a new 4K restoration presented with Dolby Vision HDR, accompanied by an extensive collection of newly produced special features celebrating the film and its place within Argento’s body of work.

Starring Stefania Rocca and Liam Cunningham, The Card Player centres on a serial killer who kidnaps young women from the streets of Rome before forcing police officers into online poker matches. Every hand carries devastating consequences. Win, and the captive lives. Lose, and the victim is murdered on a live video feed, transforming the investigation into a deadly contest where every decision comes too late for someone.

Rocca plays Italian detective Anna Mari, who joins forces with Irish investigator John Brennan, portrayed by Cunningham, as they attempt to identify the elusive murderer. The cast also includes Silvio Muccino, Claudio Santamaria and Fiore Argento, the director’s eldest daughter, who previously appeared in Phenomena.

Although The Card Player differs from many of Argento’s earlier classics, it has developed a reputation as one of his more unusual gialli, placing digital surveillance, webcams and internet technology at the centre of its mystery years before many thrillers explored similar ideas. Looking back at it now, some of those concepts feel unexpectedly contemporary. Others remain firmly rooted in the early days of the online era, which is part of the film’s particular identity.

Collectors are likely to find plenty to explore in Shameless Films’ limited edition release. Alongside the restored presentation, the package includes a newly recorded interview with Argento, archive behind-the-scenes footage from the production, fresh interviews with Rocca, Fiore Argento, editor Walter Fasano, screenwriter Franco Ferrini, production designer Antonello Geleng and actor Elisabetta Rocchetti.

The release also features a feature-length audio commentary from film historians Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson, while genre writer Alan Jones contributes a new collector’s booklet. Completing the physical edition are a two-sided art card, an original poster and a numbered O-card slipcase exclusive to the limited pressing.

Originally conceived as a follow-up to The Stendhal Syndrome, the project evolved into a standalone film after plans for a direct sequel changed. Argento also relocated the setting from Venice to Rome, returning to the city that provided the backdrop for several of his earlier thrillers.

The Card Player will be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray and digital platforms from 10 August 2026 through Shameless Films.
