ARROW Revives Coffin Joe’s Terrifying Legacy with Exclusive Film Collection

ARROW Coffin Joe

This February, ARROW is featuring the captivating and eerie world of Coffin Joe, a character from Brazilian filmmaker José Mojica Marins. Coffin Joe, with his distinctive long fingernails, top hat, and cape, first appeared in 1963 in At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul. Marins both directed and starred in these films, creating a series that spanned from 1964 to 2008. The character of Coffin Joe, whose real name is Josefel Zanatas, is known for his anti-Catholic sentiments and violent nature, often encountering supernatural phenomena such as ghosts, visions of Hell, and otherworldly beings like Death itself.

The film series, produced under harsh conditions of military dictatorship and religious censorship in Brazil, features Marins’ character navigating through various horrors and ethical dilemmas. Coffin Joe’s journey is portrayed in a series of films that reflect Marins’ lifelong passion for horror, with the character’s backstory tied to his experiences in World War II and subsequent disillusionment.

This month’s feature includes several of Marins’ films such as The Strange Hostel of Naked Pleasures, where Coffin Joe appears as the owner of a mysterious guest house, and Hellish Flesh, a story about a scientist seeking revenge after being disfigured by his wife and her lover. Another highlight is Embodiment of Evil, where Coffin Joe, after 40 years in a mental institution, continues his quest for the perfect child amidst visions of past victims and ghostly apparitions.
