‘Crushed’ Sees Steve Oram’s Vicar Confront Faith, Revenge and Abduction

Steve Oram is heading into far darker territory than usual in Crushed, Simon Rumley’s new psychological thriller about a vicar forced to confront the limits of his faith after his young daughter is abducted. Following a festival run that included FrightFest 2025, the film will make its UK digital debut on 5 October through GrimmVision.

Oram, known for Sightseers, The End of the F**ing World* and DI Ray, stars as Daniel, an English vicar living in the suburbs of Bangkok with his wife May, played by May Nattaporn Rawddon, and their 10-year-old daughter Olivia, played by Margaux Dietrich.

Their apparently peaceful life is shattered after Olivia is exposed to a disturbing animal cruelty video, setting off a chain of events that ends with her abduction. As Daniel and May search for their daughter, the couple are forced into an increasingly desperate confrontation with violence, exploitation and their own moral boundaries.

For Rumley, Crushed develops material he first explored in his 2012 short P Is for Pressure, created for horror anthology The ABCs of Death. The feature expands that concept into a story dealing with trauma, revenge, religion and the disturbing world of crush videos, while shifting the focus towards a father whose belief system is tested by circumstances that offer little room for mercy.

Shot entirely on location in Thailand, the film also uses its thriller framework to draw attention to child trafficking and animal cruelty, placing Daniel’s personal crisis within a wider world of abuse and exploitation.

Rumley has built much of his career around psychologically intense material, with previous credits including The Living and the Dead, Red White & Blue, Fashionista, Johnny Frank Garrett’s Last Word and Once Upon a Time in London. His films have played extensively across the international genre circuit, with recognition from festivals including Sitges, Fantastic Fest, Fantasia and FrightFest.

The Thailand production also continues Rumley’s long-running interest in moral pressure points and characters forced into increasingly extreme situations, here turning a clergyman’s commitment to forgiveness into the central source of tension.
