Arrow Releases Zombie Punks, Killer Comics and Asian Horror in October

It may seem hot and summery, but it’s now less than 100 days until Halloween, and Arrow Video is ushering in the season with a formidable slate of genre releases. October’s drop features a high-concept comic book adaptation, a punk-fuelled zombie cult hit, two trailblazing Asian horror anthologies, an apocalyptic Carpenter classic and a ferocious revenge thriller from the heart of 1980s New York.

Spawn on Arrow

Leading the pack is Spawn, newly restored in 4K and arriving in Limited Edition UHD and Blu-ray formats. The 1997 adaptation of Todd McFarlane’s comic book casts Michael Jai White as a betrayed Black Ops assassin reborn as a hell-bound antihero. Directed by Mark A.Z. Dippé and produced by the teams behind Blade and The Crow, Spawn returns with both its Theatrical and Director’s Cuts, alongside new interviews, featurettes and collector’s packaging.

Dan O’Bannon’s cult classic The Return of the Living Dead also receives the 4K treatment. Renowned for injecting punk chaos and biting humour into the zombie genre, the 1985 film is released with extensive bonus material, including a feature-length documentary, deleted scenes and a packed collector’s booklet. The film remains a standout for its subversive tone, practical effects and soundtrack featuring The Cramps and The Flesh Eaters.

Return of the Living Dead Arrow

Arrow then turns its attention to Asia with Limited Edition releases of Three and its successor Three… Extremes. The former features ghostly tales from Kim Jee-woon, Nonzee Nimibutr and Peter Ho-Sun Chan, while the sequel brings together Fruit Chan’s grotesque Dumplings, Park Chan-wook’s twisted Cut, and Takashi Miike’s surreal Box. Both anthologies have been meticulously restored and supplemented with new interviews and archival content.

Rob Jabbaz’s 2021 shocker The Sadness arrives on 4K UHD, including an Arrow Store Exclusive. Set in a virus-stricken Taipei, the film delivers relentless ultraviolence and extreme horror. Inspired by Garth Ennis’ Crossed, its release features extensive extras including commentaries and behind-the-scenes footage, highlighting its cult impact during the pandemic-era festival circuit.

The Sadness on Arrow

Also on the schedule is Trick ‘r Treat, presented as a Zavvi exclusive SteelBook. The Halloween-set anthology by Michael Dougherty has grown in stature since its original release, weaving together interlinked tales with a sharp blend of dark humour and seasonal dread. This edition includes newly commissioned artwork, a poster, and collector’s booklet.

John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness lands in 4K UHD for the first time. Starring Sam Neill and Jürgen Prochnow, the metafictional horror explores the terrifying power of imagination. Arrow’s release comes with extensive extras, commentaries and a bound volume of critical essays.

In the Mouth of Madness

Rounding off the month is Abel Ferrara’s incendiary Ms. 45. Restored in 4K and released in Limited Edition formats, the 1981 exploitation thriller stars Zoë Lund as a mute seamstress driven to violent retribution in a predatory city. With new artwork, essays and restoration details, it remains a potent and controversial entry in Ferrara’s catalogue.
