5 best horror movies to watch before the year ends


2022 has been an epic year for horror movies. We have seen new mind teasing, imaginative and terrifying titles emerge which have simultaneously astounded, thrilled and horror-struck with films like Smile and Nope, while this year has also witnessed the resurgence of iconic cult franchises on the big screen like Scream. With this fantastic year for horror films coming to a close, and to celebrate the Home Entertainment release of Smile, we take a look at some of 2022’s highlight horror titles, perfect to watch on these chilly winter nights…

Smile
After Smile’s highly successful and critically praised theatrical run, Paramount’s Smile is on its way to becoming one of the best modern day psychological horror films. Smile follows Dr Rose Cotter, as she is stalked by an evil entity which sinisterly smiles through people close to her, after witnessing the suicide of one of her psychiatric pateints. The film traces her terrifying and relentless visions and the grim carnage that ensues. Packed with adrenaline inducing jump scares, dynamic cinematography, tense sound effects and unnerving scenes, it is the ultimate chilling watch.

Scream
The Scream series is one of the most notorious and well-known long standing horror franchises of our time – the star of the show being the infamous Ghostface. The franchise currently comprises five films, a TV series, games and merchandise. Ghostface’s latest venture in Paramount’s 2022 title sees the ghastly figure target teenagers linked to the original murders that occurred in the sleepy town of Woodsboro 25 years ago. Neve Campbell, David Arquette and most notably Courteney Cox return to reprise their roles, alongside rising star Jenna Ortega.

Bodies Bodies Bodies
Bodies Bodies Bodies is the classic whodunnit, All-American, debauchery driven houseparty horror film, ideal for the new generation of horror film fans. This Gen Z title follows a group of rich millennials as they become trapped in a lavish mansion after a torrential hurricane hits. In typical horror film fashion, they decide to play a game to pass the time, which soon turns sinister and deadly. If you are a fan of edgy horror parody, tense moments, slasher entertainment and man of the moment Pete Davidson, then Bodies Bodies Bodies is the one for you.

Nope
Written and directed by the redefiner of modern horror Oscar winner Jordan Peele, Nope situates itself as the next ambitious film in the director’s collection. This expansive sci-fi skew horror title is set deep in the Californian desert and stars Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer. Their characters OJ and Emerald, estranged siblings who are struggling to run their late fathers ranch, notice an otherworldly and eerie colossal cloud hovering over the horizon of their ranch. What follows is a wild investigation and exhilarating but menacing mad hunt into locating the mysterious, supernatural presence.

Barbarian
From producers of IT, The Grudge and The Ring, Barbarian is an ominous, edge of your seat, jumpscare horror title with an unexpected plot twist which keeps you guessing till the very end. A simple plot at first glance – Tess, a young woman travels to stay in a rental home she has booked for a job interview. She arrives late at night to find there is already an occupant in the house. She is greeted by a creepy man already staying there, but decides against her good judgement to stay the night. What ensues is a chilling but brutal, disturbing and unpredictable thrill ride as Tess discovers there is more cause to be alarmed than only an unexpected guest.
