‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ Slashes into Cinemas this August

A collapsing slasher franchise, a reclusive scream queen and a young filmmaker chasing artistic resurrection collide in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, the latest feature from I Saw the TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun, which is set for release in UK and Irish cinemas on 21 August through MUBI.

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma
The film premiered as the opening title of the Un Certain Regard section at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where it quickly emerged as one of the festival’s most discussed genre titles. Early critical reaction has been notably strong, with five-star reviews from both The Guardian and The Telegraph, while the film currently holds a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Written and directed by Schoenbrun, the project marks their third feature following We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and the critically acclaimed I Saw the TV Glow. Continuing themes explored across their previous work, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma blends slasher conventions with queer horror and questions surrounding identity, fandom and performance.

The story follows an eager young filmmaker tasked with reviving the fictional Camp Miasma horror series after years of declining sequels and dwindling interest. Her research leads her to the original franchise star, now living in isolation and surrounded by rumour and mystery. According to the synopsis, their meeting pulls both women into “a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium”.

Hannah Einbinder, best known for her Emmy-winning role in Hacks, leads the cast alongside Gillian Anderson, whose genre credentials stretch from The X-Files to more recent projects including Scoop and Sex Education. The supporting cast includes Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kevin McDonald, Quintessa Swindell and Jack Haven.

The film was produced by Plan B, with MUBI financing the project. Daniel Bekerman of Scythia Films served as executive producer and provided local production services.

Schoenbrun’s profile has continued to rise steadily following the success of I Saw the TV Glow, which premiered at Sundance in 2024 before screening at festivals including Berlinale, SXSW and San Sebastián. The film later secured multiple Independent Spirit Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Feature.
