MUBI Drops Halloween Horror Bombshell with ‘The Substance’ Release

Streaming giant MUBI has announced that it will release The Substance, the latest film from Coralie Fargeat, on 31 October 2024 – just in time for Halloween. A provocative exploration of the beauty industry and its impacts on women’s self-image, The Substance stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, and Dennis Quaid, delivering an electrifying blend of horror, satire, and social commentary. The release date and the newly revealed trailer have already generated excitement, promising audiences a horror film that cuts deep into modern anxieties around appearance and worth.

The Substance 2024

The Substance centres around Elisabeth Sparkle, played by Demi Moore in a role that critics have called one of her best. Sparkle, a former A-list TV fitness host, is ousted from her show by an exploitative studio head, Harvey (Dennis Quaid). Facing an uncertain future, she encounters The Substance, a mysterious drug offering a path back to her youth – if only for one week at a time. Each dose transforms her into the gorgeous twenty-something Sue (Margaret Qualley), enabling her to live two lives: one as a glamorous young woman and the other as her real self. The only rule? An exact split of one week per body. But as with all too-good-to-be-true offers, this transformative experience soon takes a horrifying turn, as the price of beauty becomes all too literal.

Acclaimed for her film Revenge, Fargeat brings a sharp, satirical eye to The Substance, dismantling toxic beauty ideals and the lengths to which society pressures women to conform. Fargeat has crafted a film that is as entertaining as it is thought-provoking, presenting viewers with a “be-careful-what-you-wish-for” tale that reveals how far people may go in pursuit of youth and societal approval. The film premiered to acclaim at Cannes, where audiences and critics praised its bold storytelling and unflinching look at body image and ageism in a culture obsessed with youth.

The Substance Margaret Qualley

In her director’s statement, Fargeat shares that the inspiration for The Substance stems from her own experiences and the societal expectations placed upon women. “When I was about to turn 40, I felt this pressure—that my life was somehow over, that my value was linked to my appearance,” she explained. “This film is a personal statement and a political one. We’ve been told for so long to control, to hold back. The Substance flips that on its head, embracing the body in all its imperfections, and exposing the societal rules we’re conditioned to follow.” Fargeat describes the film as bloody, funny, and timely, using satire and body horror to liberate and empower.

Demi Moore’s performance as Elisabeth Sparkle has already been lauded as a career high, while Margaret Qualley’s portrayal of Sue brings a haunting allure to the screen. Dennis Quaid’s turn as the manipulative studio head adds another layer, embodying a figure who thrives on exploiting female insecurities.

Keith Leopard, President of MUBI, expressed his enthusiasm for the film, saying, “The Substance isn’t just a horror film—it’s a mirror to the world we live in. Coralie Fargeat has created a masterful blend of genre and social critique that will resonate with audiences.”

The Substance is set to stream exclusively on MUBI from Halloween, with a Spanish-language version also available for wider accessibility. For information on streaming, visit mubi.com/en/gb
