‘Bowels of Hell’ Unleashes Killer Toilets at Tubi FrightFest

Leave it to Tubi FrightFest to embrace the unexpected. Among this year’s most unconventional late-night attractions is Bowels of Hell, a Brazilian horror comedy that transforms one of the most ordinary household fixtures into the source of surreal terror. Combining outrageous practical gore, dark humour and an emotional family story, the film will receive its UK Premiere during the festival’s Midnight strand later this month.

Directed by Gustavo Vinagre and Gurcius Gewdner, Bowels of Hell screens at Tubi FrightFest on Thursday 27 August, introducing UK audiences to a genre film that blends body horror, social satire and psychological drama with a premise that is as bizarre as it is unforgettable.

The story follows Malu, played by Martha Nowill, a woman struggling under the weight of unresolved trauma while attempting to navigate an increasingly fractured relationship with her rebellious teenage child, Genesis. Already burdened by personal conflict and grief, Malu’s life spirals into chaos when a mysterious curse causes toilets throughout her apartment building to become murderous creatures. What begins as an absurd premise quickly develops into an increasingly surreal battle where family tensions and existential fears collide with grotesque supernatural violence.

Joining Nowill are Benjamin Damini, Majeca Angelucci and Rodrigo Apresentador, with the film promising an energetic mix of graphic horror, outrageous comedy and emotional drama. FrightFest describes the feature as a “midnight madness” experience that combines gross-out spectacle with surprising heart.

For Vinagre, the film represents an opportunity to explore familiar horror traditions through a distinctly Brazilian perspective. Best known internationally for The Blue Rose of Novalis, Vil, Má and the Teddy Award-winning Três Tigres Tristes, the filmmaker has built a reputation for blending genre storytelling with provocative themes. Co-director Gurcius Gewdner brings his own underground filmmaking background, having previously developed a cult following through transgressive productions including Pazucus: Island of Vomit and Despair and Mamilos em Chamas.

In their director’s statement, the filmmakers explain that Bowels of Hell deliberately uses horror and scatological comedy to address more serious issues. While its killer toilets provide the film’s most memorable visual hook, they also function as a metaphor for domestic environments that become places of fear rather than safety. The directors cite domestic violence, prejudice and the vulnerability of those who fall outside conventional social expectations as themes running beneath the film’s outrageous surface.

The production also marks another notable title for RT Features, one of Brazil’s leading production companies. Founded by Rodrigo Teixeira, the company has produced internationally acclaimed films including The Lighthouse, The Witch, Call Me By Your Name, Ad Astra, Bergman Island and I’m Still Here, alongside an extensive slate of Brazilian productions.
