‘Re-Animator’ Gets the Ultimate 4K Resurrection This Christmas
Stuart Gordon’s Re-Animator, one of the most influential and confrontational horror films of the 1980s, is being brought back into circulation in a major new home entertainment release from Second Sight Films. A Limited Dual Edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray box set, alongside standard 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions, from today!

First released in 1985 and loosely adapted from H.P. Lovecraft’s serial Herbert West – Reanimator, the film quickly established itself as a cult landmark, combining graphic effects, pitch-black humour and a provocative approach that saw it originally released unrated in the US. Its reputation only grew on home video, where it found a larger audience after facing censorship issues in several territories, including the UK.
The new Second Sight release presents Re-Animator in a fresh 4K restoration approved by producer Brian Yuzna, with HDR and Dolby Vision support. The Limited Edition box set is housed in a rigid slipcase featuring newly commissioned artwork by Krishna Shenoi and includes a 120-page hardback book packed with newly written essays examining the film’s themes, production history and cultural impact.
The film stars Jeffrey Combs as Herbert West, a brilliant but unhinged medical student whose experiments with reanimating dead tissue spiral into chaos after his arrival at Miskatonic Medical School. Bruce Abbott and Barbara Crampton co-star as Dan Cain and Megan Halsey, drawn into West’s increasingly dangerous work as the line between scientific ambition and moral collapse erodes. David Gale’s Dr Carl Hill remains one of the film’s most infamous antagonists, emblematic of the film’s confrontational tone.

Second Sight’s package is extensive, featuring multiple audio commentaries, newly produced interviews and archival material. Highlights include a restored presentation of the Integral Version, fresh conversations with Combs, Crampton and Yuzna, and video essays exploring Lovecraft’s legacy and the film’s place within genre cinema. Deleted and extended scenes, promotional materials and still galleries are also included.
The release underscores Re-Animator’s continued standing within horror history, not only as the starting point for a franchise that continued with Bride of Re-Animator and Beyond Re-Animator, but as a film that helped define the creative partnership between Gordon, Combs and Crampton. With its arrival on 4K, the film is positioned for rediscovery by a new generation of viewers while offering longtime fans a comprehensive archival edition… And all just in time for Christmas!
The Limited Edition and standard versions of Re-Animator are released today (15 December 2025).
