Black Sunday Film Festival Unveils Midsummer Scream Line Up

The Black Sunday Film Festival has revealed the full programme for its annual Midsummer Scream event, with a packed day of premieres, independent genre filmmaking and a mystery cult screening set to take over Firstsite (Colchester, UK) on 18 July.

Returning for another summer celebration of horror, thrillers and cult cinema, the Essex-based festival has assembled a line-up that combines international genre titles, emerging filmmaking voices and one of its most popular traditions, the Cult Film Secret Screening. Single tickets and day passes are available now as organisers prepare for what promises to be one of the festival’s biggest one-day events to date.

This year’s exciting programme opens with the UK premiere of Deep Water, the latest thriller from director Renny Harlin. Starring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley, the film places audiences in the middle of a shark-infested survival scenario and marks one of the festival’s highest-profile screenings of the day.

Another UK premiere follows with Match, directed by Daniska Esterhazy. The new thriller arrives after attracting attention on the genre festival circuit and joins a programme focused heavily on showcasing films making their first appearances before UK audiences.

Among the most anticipated titles is the Essex premiere of We Put the World to Sleep, the latest feature from Adrian Tofei. Known for his unconventional approach to filmmaking, Tofei has developed a devoted following within genre circles, and the screening gives local audiences their first opportunity to experience the film on the big screen.

Saturday evening continues with the Essex premiere of Appofeniacs, directed by Chris Marrs Piliero. The thriller has been described as stylish, chaotic and unpredictable, making it a natural fit for the festival’s late-night atmosphere.

However, for many regular attendees, the highlight of Midsummer Scream remains the Cult Film Secret Screening. Kept under wraps until showtime, the annual mystery presentation has become one of Black Sunday’s defining features. Organisers have teased a rarely screened cult classic for this year’s event, continuing a tradition that has helped distinguish the festival from larger genre gatherings around the UK.

Beyond its feature film line-up, Midsummer Scream will also showcase a diverse selection of short films from emerging international filmmakers. This year’s programme includes Foreign Bodies from Lysander Wong, Fckface* from Dean Puckett, He by Hira Vin, Itch from Joe Savage and The Eating of Sin by Gaius Milne Brown.Foreign Bodies

The shorts programme has become an increasingly important part of Black Sunday’s identity, providing a platform for filmmakers experimenting with horror, fantasy and psychological storytelling outside mainstream production models.

Following the final screening, filmmakers, guests and attendees will gather for the Black Sunday Afterparty, offering audiences an opportunity to meet creators and continue discussions long after the credits have rolled.

Founded as a champion of independent genre cinema, Black Sunday Film Festival has steadily grown its reputation through carefully curated programming and a commitment to spotlighting films that might otherwise struggle to find large theatrical audiences. While major international festivals may grab headlines, events such as Midsummer Scream continue to provide a valuable showcase for emerging voices and unconventional projects. A great reason to check it out!
