The ‘Ginger Snaps’ Trilogy Bites Back on Blu-ray this May

Second Sight Films has confirmed that The Ginger Snaps Trilogy will receive a Standard Edition Blu-ray release on 25 May 2026, bringing all three instalments of the Canadian horror series back into circulation in a new home format package.

Ginger Snaps

Originally released in 2000, Ginger Snaps introduced audiences to sisters Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, played by Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle. Set in the fictional suburb of Bailey Downs, the film follows the pair as they navigate adolescence alongside a growing series of violent incidents in their community. The story takes a decisive turn when Ginger is attacked by an unknown creature on the night of her first period, an event that begins a gradual and increasingly visible transformation.

Directed by John Fawcett and written by Karen Walton, the film drew attention at the time for its blending of coming-of-age themes with werewolf mythology. Although its initial theatrical performance was modest, the title developed a strong following through home media and festival screenings, with subsequent reassessment focusing on its thematic approach and central performances.

The 2004 sequel, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed, continues Brigitte’s story in the aftermath of the first film’s events. Directed by Brett Sullivan, the film places the character in a rehabilitation facility as she attempts to manage her own condition while being pursued by another werewolf. The cast includes Tatiana Maslany and Eric Johnson alongside Perkins, expanding the scope of the story while retaining its focus on isolation and survival.

The third entry, Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning, shifts the setting to 19th century Canada. Directed by Grant Harvey, the film presents a period storyline featuring characters who mirror the Fitzgerald sisters, placing them in a frontier environment shaped by suspicion, violence and folklore. Produced back-to-back with the second film, it completes the trilogy with a broader historical context for the themes explored in earlier instalments.

The forthcoming Blu-ray release brings the trilogy together in a single Standard Edition set following previous limited editions. While full technical specifications have not been detailed in the announcement, the package is positioned as a streamlined alternative for collectors seeking the films without additional premium extras.

Over time, Ginger Snaps has remained a consistent reference point within werewolf cinema, often discussed alongside titles such as An American Werewolf in London and The Howling, particularly for its reinterpretation of transformation within a contemporary setting.

The Ginger Snaps Trilogy Standard Edition Blu-ray will be released on 25 May 2026.
