Frat Party Turns Deadly in ‘Bystanders’
Following a wave of festival accolades, Bystanders, the directorial debut of Mary Beth McAndrews, has locked in a VOD release date of 21 January via Dread, the specialty horror label of Epic Pictures. The revenge thriller, written by Jamie Alvey, has already made an impact on the festival circuit, sweeping multiple awards at HorrorHound Film Festival and earning further recognition at Nightmares Film Festival.

Starring Brandi Botkin, Bob Wilcox, Garrett Murphy, Jamie Alvey, Chaney Morrow, and Hannah Fierman, Bystanders is a horror-thriller that blends social commentary with blood-soaked vengeance. The film centres on Abby, a socially awkward teenager who finds herself in the midst of a frat party gone horrifically wrong. When a group of privileged young men turn their party into a hunting ground, Abby’s desperate escape leads her into the path of Clare and Gray, a millennial couple who quickly realise they can no longer be passive onlookers. Together, the three form an unlikely alliance, setting out to turn the tables on their attackers in a relentless night of chaos and retribution.
McAndrews, who has been vocal about the film’s personal significance, described Bystanders as a project that holds deep emotional weight. “As a sexual assault survivor, being able to tell this story in all of its gory glory has been incredibly cathartic and liberating,” she stated. “A film like Bystanders is more important now than ever, and I’m thrilled that Dread is helping us share it with the world.”

The film’s impact was immediately felt at HorrorHound Film Festival, where it secured nominations in 11 categories, ultimately taking home seven wins, including Best Feature, Best Directing, Best Writing, and Best Supporting Performance for Garrett Murphy. The film’s cinematography and editing were also recognised, alongside a Judges’ Choice award that solidified its place as a standout of the festival.
Epic Pictures Group CEO Patrick Ewald praised McAndrews’ ability to push genre boundaries, saying, “Mary Beth McAndrews is a visionary in the world of horror, and Bystanders is a testament to her creativity and fearless storytelling. This film is not just a chilling experience; it’s a reflection of Mary Beth’s unique perspective and passion for the genre.”
Ahead of its digital release, Bystanders will have a special screening at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn on 10 March, featuring a Q&A with McAndrews moderated by horror journalist Lex Briscuso.

The film has already sparked debate among horror audiences, with fans dissecting its themes of survival, justice, and social power structures on platforms like Letterboxd. As more viewers experience Bystanders, its conversation is only expected to grow.
Tickets for the special screening are available now, and Bystanders will officially hit digital platforms on 21 January.
