‘Razor Blade Smile’ Returns Sharper Than Ever at FrightFest

The cult classic Razor Blade Smile is set to return to the big screen in stunning 4K, marking a significant milestone in its history. The 1998 British vampire thriller, directed by Jake West, will have its World Restoration Premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024 on Sunday, 25th August. This screening not only celebrates the film’s legacy but also introduces a new generation of horror fans to Lilith Silver, the assassin-vampire who has captivated audiences for over two decades.

Razor Blade Smile

Razor Blade Smile tells the story of Lilith Silver, a 19th-century woman who, after being mortally wounded in a duel, is saved from death by being transformed into a vampire. Fast forward to the 1990s, and Lilith is now a cold-blooded assassin for hire, known as “The Angel of Death.” Armed with a coffin full of weapons and centuries of undead experience, she is contracted to target a dangerous group known as “The Illuminati,” a shadowy organization with plans to control the world. However, Lilith soon discovers that the head of the Illuminati is none other than Sir Sethane Blake, the very vampire who granted her immortality, setting the stage for a bloody showdown.

The upcoming FrightFest screening is a special occasion, as it marks the first time the film will be shown in its newly restored 4K version. The restoration process, overseen by West himself, was meticulous, involving the unearthing and scanning of the original 16mm camera negatives. The film, which was originally shot on a variety of 16mm stocks, has been painstakingly cleaned up, with film damage, dust, and spots removed to reveal every detail in its full, grainy glory. West has described the restoration as the definitive vision of the film, one that finally achieves the visual impact he had always envisioned but could not fully realize with the technology available in 1998.

For fans of vampire cinema, the 4K restoration of Razor Blade Smile is a must-see, capturing the timeless, dangerous allure of its genre. The film wears its grain with pride, embodying the gritty, analogue quality that lends a certain magic to vampire stories—a quality that modern digital cameras often lack. As West notes, there’s something about film grain that has a vampiric, timeless quality, which makes Razor Blade Smile feel as relevant and dangerous as ever.

Following its premiere at FrightFest, the restored version of Razor Blade Smile will continue to be showcased at festivals worldwide, with a re-release on 4K UHD and Blu-ray scheduled for 2025 by Severin Films in the US and Nucleus Films in the UK. This resurrection of a cult classic is a testament to the enduring appeal of Lilith Silver and her blood-soaked tale of revenge, making Razor Blade Smile a standout highlight in this year’s FrightFest lineup.
