Horror Favourites – Susie Moloney

This January, Uncork’d Entertainment takes you down the terrifying trail of Bright Hill Roa and to celebrate we chatted to writer Susie Moloney about her favorite horror film.

Starring Siobhan Williams (Welcome to Marwen), Agam Darshi (“Sanctuary”) and Michael Eklund (The Call), Robert Cuffley’s unnerving twist-encompassing thrill ride comes home January 12.

When a misstep after a workplace shooting puts alcoholic Marcy on leave, she heads out to see her sister in California. Halfway there, she stops for a couple of days at the Bright Hill Road Boarding House. The walls close in on the deeply troubled Marcy, as she loses touch with reality and comes face to face with the misdeeds of her sordid past.

Below Bright Hill Road writer Susie Moloney tells us all about her favorite horror film:

“Whenever I find myself on a residential street, I look closely at the houses, bottom to top to determine which are haunted. Haunted, not haunted, not haunted, haunted, definitely haunted … because a ghost story is my very favourite. Which made the choosing of my favourite horror movie easy. My choice changes from time to time, but I always come back to a core few: The Changeling (1980), The Ring (2002), and The Others (2001).

Here’s the thing about a ghost story: you can deal with the man-made elements of a slasher flick, an apocalypse, a zombie. Eventually the helicopters will come for the monster, shooting him off the building. What the heck are you going to do about a ghost? The villagers and their torches will not send it away, the police can’t help you, the second amendment does not apply. The best you can do is try and get them out of your house.

The Others, written and directed by Alejandro Amenabar, is a perfect ghost story. Vulnerable characters at the centre, a bleak, isolated setting, grief. With weaving shots, the clank of locks, the clatter of quickly closed windows and doors, every creak suspect, every shadow something else. I bet I’ve seen this movie dozen times. I keep going back to it because it gets inside of me. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up, the gooseflesh on my arms rises, in my head I know it’s not real. My gut tells me differently. And that ending never fails to get me. I think I’ll watch it tonight.”

Bright Hill Road is out On Demand and DVD now.
