Tell us about your film?
Polterheist is a low budget indie gangster black comedy/horror film set in the crumbling urban sprawl of Bradford, West Yorkshire. It’s about two low-level members of the Asian-run mafia who accidentally kill their boss and so decide to kidnap a psychic medium to find out where their dead gaffer hid a load of drug money.

How did you get into making horror movies?
I’ve always been a fan of classic horror films from the 70s, such as the Exorcist and The Omen, in addition to drive-in movies like Food of The Gods, Killdozer and The Car. When I started making films it always felt natural that I would make Horror films, or movies with elements of horror. The TV version of the Lady in Black from the late 80s was also a particular inspiration.

What is your view on horror in 2018 and how would you change it?
Horror seems to be making a huge comeback this year and is smashing box office receipts. I like that there are a lot of original ideas coming through. In the face of the relentless barrage of remakes and superhero movies that dominate multiplex schedules around the world, it’s the horror genre that is staying fresh with original ideas and different messages. I’d like to see Horror become more ambitious and play with other genres like superhero and sci-fi. It would make them more interesting.

What is your favourite horror film and why?
Alien. Because I saw it too young and it continues to punch hard 40 years later. Tight script. Great characters. Awesome acting. Great set. Terrific direction. Perfect organism.

If Hollywood came knocking and gave you anything you wanted what movie would you make and who would it star?
I would love to do ‘Alien on Earth’ or ‘Alien infestation on earth’ film. They’ve been flirting with it for years. I would make a film of desperate survival and courage against an infestation of millions of Aliens. It needs to be done. The Dark Horse graphic novels would make terrific films. Alternatively I would make ‘Cull’ a screenplay that Paul Renhard and I wrote a few years ago. It’s about a Soylent Green-type future where we farm ourselves -humans- to feed our alien masters. I would love to work with Claire Foy or Dominic West for either of these films. Or the guy who plays Morse in Endeavour. All these actors have that certain frail intensity that is ideal for Horror.
