Five FrightFest Facts From Issa López director of Tigers are not Afraid

1. Tell us about your film?
Tigers is a movie made out of a desperate need to survive as who you really are in a world who does not care for people like you. It’s not “change to survive”, it’s “remember who you are to regain your place”. That is the hero’s journey in the movie, and it was very much my own adventure making it, and fighting for it to be seen. Nobody wants to see these children, left on the sides of a conflict fuelled by greed. But they need to be seen.

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
By loving horror. I think realizing that you can experiment fear in a controlled environment, and stop it at will, gives you the power to control fear in a very scary universe. Being able to cause fear, to make people feel it and even enjoy it, is an incredible gift. A superpower of sorts. How to say no to this?

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
It’s been ages since I last saw Julia’s Haunting. It’s such an incredible adaptation of a very unique horror story. It’s highly unusual to portray children as truly evil. As aware of their own demons. This movie is like that, and unjustly forgotten.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
The New Fear Award. What movie made us feel a new kind a of fear? Something that had not scared us before?

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
We are All You. Aubrey Plaza would do an amazing job!
