Five FrightFest Facts From Andy Mitton director of The Witch in the Window

1. Tell us about your film?
THE WITCH IN THE WINDOW is a story of a separated father and his twelve-year old son, who go to Vermont for the summer to fix up an old farmhouse and flip it. Only trouble is, the previous owner who died in the house – an infamous woman named Lydia – doesn’t seem to have left. And with every repair they make, her spirit gets stronger. It’s a creepy thriller, and also a story about the horrors of bringing up children in a world where you can’t keep them safe.

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
Like most, I began as a fan, as a kid watching everything I could get my hands on, just obsessed with the exhilaration of experiencing the dark corners while in a totally safe place. I immediately sensed the value in that, and I loved stuff like HALLOWEEN and CREEPSHOW and FRIDAY THE 13TH as much as I also loved masterworks THE EXORCIST, CARRIE, THE SHINING. All of these movies stay in my collection, on rotation. And making horror movies is a great way to stay thirteen years old in your heart while also getting to grow up and get serious.

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
One that comes to mind for me is THE LAST BROADCAST, a found-footage film that pre-dates THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT about some webcasters who venture into the Pine Barrens for a live show about the Jersey Devil. It’s super scrappy and imperfect, but it also is very ambitious and grounded until a totally gonzo ending. For all its flaws, it’s also a celebration of innovation and creativity and that beautiful naïve feeling we all start out with, when we think who cares if there’s no money and no stars and no chance in hell, we’re doing it anyway, damn it. So even though I mostly avoid found footage films at this point, I love the spirit of this movie, and there’s a mood to it that’s actually extremely dark and effective. Plus, I bet it would be a blast to watch with a packed house.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
How about Best Individual Moment for any film in terms of audience impact. Maybe it’s a jump scare that unravels the crowd, a controversial turn that polarizes and incites everyone, an unexpected huge laugh. The hand out of the grave in CARRIE, that evil cut to the closet corpse in THE RING – big blow-ups. It’s what we all dream of, really moving an audience, and sometimes it’s about one incredible (or horrible) moment.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
Oh man. It would have to be one of those things where you don’t know it’s a horror movie till halfway through I think, like AUDITION, because I’m doing okay now but I’ve got time and – God, no, I take it back, I don’t want to be in a burlap sack, and…wait, if I get to choose, then I want not-too-scary with a happy ending, let’s call it SOMETIMES SCARY BUT TOTALLY FINE IN THE END, DON’T WORRY. Starring some appropriate ball of anxiety like Jesse Eisenberg or Michael Cera.
