‘Electric Meat’ Serves Up Psychosexual Horror at FrightFest

A struggling photographer, a murdered model and a body that refuses to remain a passive object sit at the centre of Electric Meat, Dan Schaffer’s surreal psychosexual thriller, which will receive its world premiere at Tubi FrightFest in London on 28 August.

Written and directed by Schaffer, the film stars Caspian Faye as a failed artist working by day as a butcher. His life shifts after he discovers one of his models dead in an alley and, already desensitised by his work around flesh, decides to keep her body as a muse for his faltering career. It is a grim premise, though the film appears less interested in concealment than in the photographer’s certainty that he can still control what he has taken.

That certainty begins to fracture when the body appears to exist somewhere between life and death. Described through the idea of Schrödinger’s cat, the model changes from a posed subject into something far more threatening, with the photographer gradually convinced that his muse is rebelling against him.

Emily Booth plays the Butcher’s landlady, a former model with her own resentments and ambitions. As his fear deepens, she moves closer to the centre of his work, offering another form of inspiration that proves no safer. Nina Courson and Sylvia Soska also star.

The newly released trailer introduces the film’s mix of body horror, sexual unease and darkly comic imagery ahead of its festival debut. According to the official synopsis, the Butcher becomes trapped between two competing muses as his artistic obsession descends into violence. There is something almost practical about his initial decision, or at least he seems to regard it that way, which makes the material feel more disturbing than a straightforward tale of possession.

Schaffer is best known as the writer of Jake West’s horror comedy Doghouse and for creating the graphic novel that formed the basis of The Scribbler. His other screenwriting credits include the technology-driven thriller Peripheral. On Electric Meat, he also serves as editor, extending his role across the project’s writing, direction and final construction.

Faye’s previous credits include Kingsman: The Secret Service, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: The Dark World. Booth returns to material closely tied to British independent horror after appearances in Evil Aliens, Cradle of Fear, Inbred, Doghouse and Shed of the Dead. Soska, meanwhile, is known for her work with twin sister Jen Soska on Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary, See No Evil 2 and Rabid.
