‘Dracula’ Heads New Wave of Hammer Films 4K Restorations

Hammer Films is preparing to give one of British horror’s defining classics a new lease of life this autumn, with a landmark 4K restoration of Dracula set to arrive in cinemas and on home entertainment featuring footage unseen for more than six decades.

Dracula

The restored edition of the 1958 film will be released in October as the most complete version ever assembled, following an extensive restoration drawing upon archival materials sourced from around the world. Hammer says the project reinstates long-lost footage while presenting the film in 4K for the first time, bringing Christopher Lee’s landmark performance as Count Dracula and Peter Cushing’s Professor Van Helsing back to audiences ahead of Halloween.

The announcement headlines a wider slate of restorations and collector’s editions unveiled by Hammer, reflecting the studio’s continuing investment in preserving its extensive catalogue for modern audiences.

X the Unknown Hammer

Among the latest titles joining the label’s 4K Limited Collector’s Edition range is X the Unknown, the 1956 science fiction horror directed by Leslie Norman and written by Hammer regular Jimmy Sangster. Often discussed alongside the Quatermass films because of its shared themes and atmosphere, the film makes its debut on both Blu-ray and 4K UHD as it approaches its 70th anniversary.

Hammer has also restored Break in the Circle, a lesser-known crime thriller starring Eva Bartok and Marius Goring. Restored from the original camera negatives, the film showcases another side of the studio’s output beyond its celebrated Gothic horrors, revisiting the international thrillers that formed part of Hammer’s early production slate.

36 Hours Hammer

Completing the latest wave of releases is 36 Hours, Montgomery Tully’s 1953 Brit-noir, now available worldwide on 4K UHD and Blu-ray for the first time following a new restoration.

Alongside its own productions, Hammer continues expanding its Hammer Presents label, a collection dedicated to restoring and releasing notable British and international genre films. The latest additions include Curtis Harrington’s Whoever Slew Auntie Roo?, starring Shelley Winters, which arrives on home entertainment on 17 August, and Gordon Hessler’s Murders in the Rue Morgue, featuring Jason Robards and Herbert Lom in a Gothic mystery inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s classic story.

Taken together, the announcements underline Hammer’s ongoing restoration programme, which has increasingly focused on presenting both celebrated classics and overlooked titles in newly restored editions while preserving their original cinematic presentation for future generations.

Hammer’s new 4K restoration of Dracula arrives in cinemas and on home entertainment this October, while Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? is released on 17 August. Pre-orders for the latest collector’s editions are available now.
