‘The Abominable Snowman’ Climbs Back in Stunning 4K

More than six decades after audiences first ventured into the frozen Himalayas with Peter Cushing, Hammer Films is preparing to unveil what it describes as the most complete version of The Abominable Snowman ever released. The 1957 British sci-fi horror classic has undergone a brand-new 4K restoration using newly uncovered film materials that had long been believed lost, with the uncut edition arriving on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray for the very first time anywhere in the world on 31 August.

The Abominable Snowman Hammer

The Limited Collector’s Edition celebrates one of Hammer’s most thoughtful genre productions, reuniting The Quatermass Xperiment writer Nigel Kneale with director Val Guest for a tale that explores myth, obsession and humanity against the backdrop of the Himalayas. Peter Cushing stars as botanist Dr John Rollason, whose scientific curiosity leads him to join an expedition searching for the legendary Yeti, while Forrest Tucker plays the ambitious adventurer determined to capture the elusive creature for fame and profit.

Restored in 4K by Silver Salt Restoration from original archival film elements that had not been incorporated into previous restorations, Hammer says the release presents the definitive version of the film. The set includes both the original UK theatrical cut and the American release, retitled The Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, with each version featuring a newly created 5.1 soundtrack alongside the original mono audio.

Collectors can also expect an extensive package of newly produced bonus material. Among the exclusive features are documentaries exploring the making of the film, the lost BBC television play The Creature that inspired it, Hammer production designer Bernard Robinson’s work, and cinema’s enduring fascination with cryptid folklore. New video essays, archival galleries and the original theatrical trailer are also included.

The four-disc edition is housed in a leather-feel slipcase featuring newly commissioned artwork by Joe Avery and contains a double-sided poster, eight reproduction lobby cards and a 120-page book packed with newly commissioned writing examining the production, Nigel Kneale’s original television script, and the creative influences behind the story.

Originally released in 1957, The Abominable Snowman was adapted from Kneale’s acclaimed BBC television drama The Creature. Rather than presenting the Yeti as a conventional movie monster, the story offered a more philosophical take on the legendary cryptid, an approach that has helped the film earn lasting admiration among Hammer enthusiasts and historians despite being overshadowed at the time by the enormous success of The Curse of Frankenstein.

Hammer has spent the past year expanding its programme of premium restorations, with titles including Dracula, X the Unknown and Break in the Circle all receiving similar collector-focused releases as the studio continues to revisit key works from its archive.
