‘Passenger’ Brings Road Trip Terror to Cinemas This May
There’s no outrunning what’s following in Passenger, a new supernatural horror that turns open roads into a trap. Paramount Pictures have just released a new trailer for the film, offering a first look at André Øvredal’s latest horror project ahead of its cinema debut on 22 May 2026.

The film centres on a young couple travelling across the country in a converted van, part of a growing subculture drawn to life on the road. Their trip takes a sudden turn when they witness a violent highway accident. What follows, according to the newly unveiled footage, is less about escape and more about endurance, as something unseen begins to follow them long after they leave the crash behind.
The trailer leans heavily into isolation, placing its characters on empty roads and in unfamiliar towns, with the sense that distance offers little protection. Dialogue hints at a presence referred to as ‘the Passenger’, described as something that attaches itself to its victims and cannot be outrun.

Directed by Øvredal, whose previous work includes Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, the film is written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Producers Walter Hamada and Gary Dauberman, both known for their involvement in major studio horror titles, are behind the project, with Christopher Young providing the score.
The cast is led by Lou Llobell and Jacob Scipio as the central couple, with Melissa Leo also appearing in a supporting role. While plot details remain relatively contained, the trailer makes clear that the film’s focus stays tightly on its core characters as they attempt to understand what is happening to them.

Passenger was first teased in cinemas earlier this year with exclusive footage attached to genre releases, but this marks the first full public look at the film. The marketing positions it within a familiar framework of supernatural pursuit, though its road setting offers a different backdrop from more contained horror stories.
The film arrives in cinemas on 22 May, having moved forward from its original release slot. Paramount has not yet confirmed certification details.
