‘Possession’ Returns in a Deluxe 4K Revival
Second Sight Films is closing out the year with a major event for genre collectors, preparing to unleash a new 4K restoration of Andrzej Zulawski’s Possession on 15 December. Long regarded as one of the most unsettling and fiercely original entries in psychological horror, the 1981 film returns in Limited Edition and standard formats, marking the most exhaustive home release the title has ever received in the UK.

Once banned and placed on the Video Nasties list, Possession has grown into a cult monument thanks to its extreme emotional pitch, abrasive intensity and unforgettable central performances. Isabelle Adjani delivers what is still considered one of the boldest turns in modern horror as Anna, a woman in violent psychological freefall during the collapse of her marriage. The role earned her Best Actress at both Cannes and the César Awards. Opposite her, Sam Neill captures the spiralling paranoia of a husband desperate for answers but unprepared for the nightmarish truth waiting in a derelict Berlin apartment.
?u?awski’s filmmaking, often described as feverish and operatic, pushes the couple’s disintegration into a delirious collision of marital trauma, Cold War unease and monstrous creation. The work of special effects legend Carlo Rambaldi heightens the horror, with imagery that remains disturbing more than four decades later.
The new Limited Edition Dual Format Box Set, presented in a rigid slipcase featuring Basha’s original theatrical artwork, includes both the original cut and the rarely seen North American re-edit, newly restored from archive materials. Accompanied by a 220-page hardback book and a wealth of extras, the release offers extensive critical insight, new commentaries and a contribution from Guillermo del Toro, who has long championed the film’s unique power. Standard 4K UHD and Blu-ray editions will be available on the same date.

Possession follows Anna and Mark as their failing relationship erupts into violence, obsession and a grotesque secret that shatters the boundaries between human and inhuman. As Anna grows increasingly erratic, Mark becomes convinced she is seeing another man, unaware that her clandestine visits are to a creature that defies explanation. ?u?awski’s blend of psychological collapse and supernatural horror results in a film that remains confrontational, divisive and impossible to forget.
Though dismissed on its initial release due to cuts and confusion surrounding its genre-blending approach, Possession has since been reclaimed by critics and scholars. It is now hailed as one of the most daring horror films ever made, with commentators praising its raw emotional force and its ability to tap into something primal. Its cult reputation has soared in recent years, with modern restorations and renewed academic interest highlighting the film’s influence on extreme cinema and psychological horror.
Second Sight’s new restoration gives Possession its most complete presentation to date, offering a definitive edition for a film that still feels dangerous.
Possession releases on 15 December on Limited Edition 4K UHD/Blu-ray, alongside standard 4K and Blu-ray editions.
