Hollywood Heirs Targeted in ‘Death Mask Vol. 2’

When Detective Sonia Maza returns to the page in Death Mask Vol. 2: Ichor Azure, readers are plunged into a sun-drenched but sinister Los Angeles where the children of the glitterati become prey. Storm King Comics’ Dark & Twisted imprint launches this original graphic novel on 22 July, reuniting New York Times bestselling writer Amanda Deibert and illustrator Cat Staggs with co-creator Sandy King.

In this sequel to the acclaimed Death Mask, Maza races against time to unravel a spree of abductions and murders among twenty-something heirs and heiresses. As two young women vanish from their opulent Hills parties, the veteran detective realises her usual methods have hit a dead end. Haunted by her near-fatal encounter with Alejandra – Death Mask herself – Maza makes an impossible choice: she must call on the unrepentant killer to help profile a vengeful murderer who moves in the shadows of the social media elite.

The uneasy alliance at the heart of Ichor Azure explores what happens when protector and predator share a common goal. Maza must confront her own trauma as she navigates through lavish mansions and hidden recording studios, piecing together cryptic clues before the next livestreamed funeral. In this world, followers and victims are counted with equal gravity.

Storm King Comics founder and editor Sandy King describes the series as “a female Punisher” tale brought to life with “beautiful visuals and dark, unsettling crime stories.” Under her guidance, Deibert’s script delivers sharp dialogue and relentless pacing, while Staggs’s art renders every neon-lit poolside and gilded penthouse with nail-biting tension. The colour palette shifts from the bright glare of paparazzi flashes to the ink-black abyss of L.A. backstreets.

Death Mask Vol. 2: Ichor Azure cements the Dark & Twisted line’s reputation for chilling, high-concept thrillers. Alongside other titles such as Long Haul – a grisly odyssey through America’s loneliest highways—and The Killing Hole, which examines a friendship turned fatal, the new volume deepens the imprint’s exploration of human darkness. All Dark & Twisted graphic novels can be found at comic stores, online retailers and bookshops from 22 July.

Storm King Comics, established in 2012 under Sandy King and John Carpenter’s umbrella, has become a beacon for genre storytelling. From the bestselling John Carpenter’s Asylum to the award-winning Tales for a HalloweeNight, the publisher continues to expand with offerings like John Carpenter Presents Storm Kids and the Raven Banner-distributed horror series.

With Ichor Azure, Deibert and Staggs raise the stakes once more, proving that in Hollywood’s glare, shadows can kill.
