Demonic Retro Mischief in ‘Frankie Freako’
Lightbulb Film Distribution is set to launch a daft and deadly dose of 80s-style horror-comedy when Frankie Freako arrives on digital platforms in the UK and Ireland from 14 July. The film, written and directed by genre maverick Steven Kostanski, pays affectionate homage to cult classics like Gremlins, Ghoulies and Critters, plunging viewers into a world where a simple phone call can unleash pint-sized evil.

Conor Sweeney takes centre stage as the unwitting hero who dials a late-night party hotline and inadvertently opens a gateway to chaos. On the other end of the line lurks Frankie Freako, a diminutive demon with a fondness for mischief, brought to hideous life by Kostanski’s trademark fusion of practical effects and puppetry. Adam Brooks and Kristy Wordsworth round out the principal cast, enacting Sweeney’s frantic scramble to contain the mayhem before it overruns his hometown.
The film made its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival, where audiences embraced its delirious blend of slapstick horror, rapid-fire one-liners and nostalgia-heavy visuals. YouTuber Rich Evans of RedLetterMedia fame lends his voice to the film’s arch-villain, President Munch, offering suitably bombastic commentary as Sweeney’s nemesis.

Speaking to the press, Lightbulb’s Sales & Acquisitions Director Peter Thompson said, “We are thrilled to be bringing Frankie Freako to audiences in the UK & Ireland. As huge fans of Psycho Goreman, we jumped at the chance to work with Steven Kostanski. Frankie Freako is a zany, nostalgic ride. It’s time to get Freako!”
Kostanski, known for his makeup and effects work on In A Violent Nature, returns to his directorial roots with this manic feature. Drawing on the era’s penchant for over-the-top creature design and practical gore, he crafts a film that feels both warmly familiar and unapologetically anarchic. The narrative’s ticking clock – Sweeney must fend off rabbit-sized horrors until dawn – offers a relentless pace, ensuring no moment of downtime as blood-soaked hijinks ensue.

From 14 July, fans can preorder or rent Frankie Freako via the Apple Store, Amazon, Sky Store and YouTube Movies. By the looks of the trailer and press imaged, the film promises a compact but raucous romp for horror enthusiasts seeking a retro thrill.
