Tim Burton’s Bloodiest Musical Hits 4K in July

Fans of Tim Burton’s macabre musical thriller will soon be able to experience Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in unprecedented clarity. Warner Bros Discovery Home Entertainment has announced the film’s first ever 4K Ultra HD release, arriving on 7 July in the UK and Ireland. The upgrade brings high dynamic range to Burton’s Oscar®-winning adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s stage classic, promising richer reds in the blood and sharper contrasts in the grimy alleys of Victorian London.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Originally released in 2007, Sweeney Todd earned acclaim for its artful blend of horror and song. The film took home the Academy Award® for Best Art Direction while Johnny Depp earned a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the wronged barber, and Helena Bonham Carter shared the screen as Mrs Lovett, Todd’s partner in crime. Alan Rickman’s portrayal of the corrupt Judge Turpin added to the film’s star power, rounding out a cast that has now gained a new home-video lease of life.

The 4K UHD edition boasts a wealth of bonus material drawn from the original production archives. A key feature is “Burton + Depp + Carter = Todd”, which offers exclusive rehearsal footage and behind-the-scenes glimpses at the collaboration between director Burton and his two leading actors. Other extras include press conference highlights, a documentary on the true criminal legend that inspired the tale, and a deep dive into Sondheim’s musical legacy. For aficionados of cinematic craft, “Designs For A Demon” examines the film’s lavish production design, while “A Bloody Business” dissects the choreography of its most grisly moments.

Audio on the new disc has been upgraded to DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, with Dolby Digital tracks in multiple languages, and subtitles catering to a broad audience. The original Blu-ray and DVD presentation remains intact on a secondary disc, ensuring collectors can compare the remastered visuals with the high-definition transfer they know.

Burton’s film marked a rare foray into full-length musical for the director of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and its return to physical formats underscores the enduring appetite for adult-oriented cinema musicals. Depp’s Sweeney, a man consumed by vengeance after the unjust jailing that cost him family and fortune, cuts a tragic figure as he restores his barber’s shop and takes his revenge one razor-sharp stroke at a time. Mrs Lovett, ever the pragmatist, sees opportunity in the fallen bodies, spinning grisly profits from her meat pies.

For viewers who have yet to meet the dreaded barber of Fleet Street, this edition offers the definitive version. And for those who already own the film on Blu-ray, the visual upgrade and extensive special features provide compelling reasons to revisit the dark heart of London’s underworld.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street struts into 4K UHD on 7 July 2025, inviting newcomers and long-time fans to sharpen their blades once more.
