‘Quatermass’ Restored as Hammer’s Sci-Fi Legacy Lives On
Hammer Films continues its restoration campaign with the long-awaited release of The Quatermass Xperiment in a 4K Limited Collector’s Edition, bringing one of British science fiction’s most formative texts back into the spotlight. The release is available now, with its equally influential sequel Quatermass 2 currently up for pre-order.

Premiering 70 years ago, The Quatermass Xperiment marked a defining moment for Hammer, laying the foundations for a distinctly British take on sci-fi horror. Directed by Val Guest and based on the work of writer Nigel Kneale, the film follows a manned spaceflight that ends in disaster when one astronaut returns to Earth irrevocably changed. What begins as a standard recovery mission quickly spirals into a creeping terror as the lone survivor’s mutation progresses, putting humanity on a collision course with the unknown.
While its atmosphere, paranoia and stark black-and-white visuals have cemented its reputation for decades, this new restoration offers a clarity never before seen in home formats. Meticulously restored from the original film elements, the five-disc 4K UHD and Blu-ray set is designed to preserve the film’s grain, contrast and mid-century texture without compromising on visual detail. Alongside the remastered feature, the release arrives packed with a formidable catalogue of bonus material.

These include a range of new and archival commentaries from figures such as actor and historian Toby Hadoke, Hammer expert Constantine Nasr, filmmaker Steve Haberman, and Val Guest himself. The collection also features extensive documentaries, rare BBC interviews with Kneale and producer Rudolph Cartier, and a tribute to Richard Wordsworth, whose portrayal of Victor Carroon remains a high point of mid-century screen horror.
Additional extras include surviving episodes from the original 1953 BBC television serial, a segment on the film’s make-up effects, and an array of trailers, foreign titles and ephemera that speak to the film’s legacy and reach. The disc also includes The Eric Winstone Bandshow, a musical short that premiered with the film in 1955, offering a glimpse into the theatrical context of its original release.

The restoration and release are part of a wider initiative from Hammer to remaster its catalogue and make key titles available in high definition for a new generation of viewers. Earlier efforts have included reissues of gothic horror staples such as Dracula and The Curse of Frankenstein, but The Quatermass Xperiment represents a shift toward science fiction and the studio’s television legacy.
Quatermass’s influence on everything from Doctor Who to Alien is well documented, and this collector’s edition seeks to position the film not simply as a historical artefact, but as a living document of British genre filmmaking. With Quatermass 2 set to follow, fans and scholars alike are offered a rare opportunity to revisit these foundational works in their most complete form to date.
