First Trailer for ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Teases Franchise Farewell

New Line Cinema has released the first teaser trailer and poster for The Conjuring: Last Rites, the ninth instalment in the long-running supernatural franchise. Directed by Michael Chaves, the film reunites Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, in what is expected to be their final outing. The film will be released in UK cinemas on 5 September 2025.

The teaser offers a brief but atmospheric glimpse into what appears to be a more personal chapter in the franchise, as the Warrens’ daughter Judy (played by The Serpent Queen‘s Mia Tomlinson) and her boyfriend Tony (Ben Hardy) become drawn into the supernatural events unfolding. Further casting includes returning franchise actor Steve Coulter as Father Gordon, alongside Rebecca Calder, Elliot Cowan, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Beau Gadsdon, John Brotherton, and Shannon Kook.

Last Rites is co-written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing and franchise regular David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, based on a story developed with James Wan. The plot remains tightly under wraps, but early materials suggest a return to the classic haunted-house tone of the earlier entries, with a focus on generational trauma and the dangers of inherited spiritual burden. Judy Warren, who was last seen as a child in Annabelle Comes Home, is now an adult, and her connection to her parents’ legacy appears to be a driving force in the film’s direction.

Chaves, who previously helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun II, returns to direct from behind the camera, joined by a creative team that includes cinematographer Eli Born, production designer John Frankish and composer Benjamin Wallfisch. The new film follows a broader attempt by New Line and Warner Bros. to revitalise the Conjuring universe after its box office highs and uneven critical reception in recent years.

With the franchise approaching its twelfth year and over $2.2 billion in global box office takings, The Conjuring: Last Rites is being positioned as a major event release. While neither Warner Bros. nor New Line have confirmed whether this will be the final film in the main series, its title and promotional materials point toward a conclusion of sorts for the Warrens’ cinematic journey.
