‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Sends ‘The Nun’ Packing with Record-Breaking Box Office Haul

The Conjuring: Last Rites has officially claimed the title of the highest-grossing film in The Conjuring Universe, toppling The Nun from its seven-year reign. With a global box office total of $403 million and counting, the film has rewritten franchise history and is quickly climbing the ranks of 2025’s most financially successful films.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

Directed by Michael Chaves, Last Rites is the fourth main entry in the supernatural series and marks the apparent swan song for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s long-running characters Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film opened in early September with a record-breaking $194 million worldwide, the largest global opening weekend for a horror title to date. That figure allowed it to leapfrog the $190 million debut of 2017’s It, setting a new standard for the genre.

By its third weekend, the film had amassed $152.8 million domestically and $249.5 million from international markets. That total puts it ahead not only of The Nun‘s $366 million global haul but also 2016’s The Conjuring 2, which previously held second place with just over $320 million. While some may point out that adjusted for inflation The Nun might still have the edge, the rapid pace at which Last Rites continues to draw audiences suggests it will likely surpass any such benchmarks in the weeks to come.

The Nun

The success of Last Rites hasn’t stopped with the Conjuring franchise either. It has also overtaken a number of notable blockbuster titles, including Marvel’s Eternals and the original Toy Story. More recently, it has edged past 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which finished with $403.5 million globally. Last Rites is also expected to overtake Tom Cruise’s The Mummy (2017) soon and may even challenge the $433 million total of The Mummy Returns if momentum continues.

The film currently sits at number 12 in the global box office chart for the year, just behind Captain America: Brave New World, and is projected to crack the top ten before the end of its theatrical run.

While Last Rites was promoted as a conclusion to the Warrens’ story, Warner Bros. has no plans to close the door on its lucrative horror franchise. A new prequel is reportedly in development, with other spin-offs such as The Crooked Man still in consideration. The appetite for supernatural horror clearly remains high, and Last Rites proves the franchise is more commercially powerful than ever.
