‘The Substance’: Demi Moore’s Dark New Role Hits UK Cinemas

Demi Moore is making waves with her return to the big screen in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, a provocative new film that captivated audiences at the Cannes Film Festival and earned an impressive 13-minute standing ovation. The film, which tackles themes of body horror, societal pressures, and the desire for self-perfection, will be released in UK cinemas on 20th September.

Directed by French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat, known for her 2018 revenge thriller Revenge, The Substance centres on a revolutionary product that promises to create a younger, “perfected” version of oneself. However, the catch is both versions must share equal time, raising eerie questions about identity, vanity, and what it means to truly exist in a society obsessed with perfection. Moore takes on the lead role of Elizabeth Sparkle, a once-iconic TV aerobics host who has been sidelined due to her age. Desperate to reclaim her former glory, she turns to The Substance, only to find herself replaced by her younger counterpart, portrayed by Margaret Qualley.

The film’s commentary on the pressures women face in society is central to its story. During a press conference at Cannes, Moore shared her thoughts on playing such a challenging and introspective role. “I was drawn to this project because it pushes you to confront uncomfortable truths—about validation, self-worth, and our obsession with how we are perceived,” Moore said. “It’s a story that delves into extremes, but ultimately holds a mirror to the way we live.”

Fargeat’s direction explores the dark side of beauty and perfection, while Moore’s portrayal of Elizabeth captures the emotional turmoil of ageing in a society that values youth above all. The film doesn’t shy away from these intense subjects, using body horror to make the point even more visceral. Fargeat explained her vision, stating, “The Substance is about our complex relationship with our bodies and how societal expectations shape our self-perception. Women, in particular, are often under pressure to meet impossible standards, and this film confronts that reality.”

Dennis Quaid, who plays a chauvinistic television network boss in the film, described Moore’s performance as “career-defining,” calling her work “an incredible third act” in her long and storied career. Quaid’s character was originally meant to be played by the late Ray Liotta, and Quaid dedicated his performance to the legendary actor, adding emotional weight to his role in the film.

The creative team behind The Substance includes cinematographer Benjamin Kracun, whose haunting visuals enhance the film’s eerie atmosphere, and composer Raffertie, whose score heightens the tension throughout. The editing team, led by Fargeat alongside Jérôme Eltabet and Valentin Feron, ensures the film’s suspense and psychological intensity never waver.

As the release date approaches, The Substance is expected to make a significant impact. Moore’s portrayal of a woman struggling with both her inner and outer self resonates deeply, particularly in an industry—and world—where the pursuit of youth and beauty is never-ending. The film is not only a return to form for Moore but a searing commentary on the lengths we go to for validation.

This thought-provoking and visually striking film is poised to become one of the year’s most talked-about releases, thanks to its bold exploration of identity, ageing, and the cost of perfection. Don’t miss it when it hits cinemas nationwide on 20th September.
