Horror Anthology ‘Tales from the Void’ Makes Eerie Debut at Grimmfest

Grimmfest 2024 is set to deliver a major treat for horror fans as Tales from the Void, an episodic horror anthology series inspired by viral stories from the r/NoSleep community, premieres with three unsettling episodes. On 3rd October at the Odeon Great Northern in Manchester, festival-goers will be the first in Europe to experience this macabre series, ahead of its wider release in the UK in 2025.

Showrunners Francesco Loschaivo and John Kelley will introduce the screening and host a Q&A session, offering a deeper dive into the creation of the series. They will shed light on how they’ve brought some of the most disturbing tales from r/NoSleep to life on screen, transforming internet legends into a thought-provoking and terrifying TV series.

The anthology format of Tales from the Void is a direct nod to the classic horror anthologies many grew up watching, but with a contemporary edge. It’s designed to not only scare, but also provide biting social commentary. Each episode tackles controversial and unsettling subject matter, reflecting the dark corners of the internet that r/NoSleep has made its home. As Loschaivo explains, “The show brings back the thrill of discovering short, scary stories like we did in the ’90s, but for an adult audience. It’s a celebration of horror, and the themes it explores will leave people thinking long after the credits roll.”

At the Grimmfest preview, three episodes will be shown, each showcasing a different horror subgenre:

Into the Unknown: Directed by Joe Lynch, this episode delves into the mysterious appearance of a black square in a low-income apartment complex, sparking fear and distrust among the residents. As tensions rise, the true horror lurking in the shadows is revealed.
Plastic Smile: A chilling portrayal of childhood trauma, addiction, and an eerie porcelain doll. This episode follows Abigail, a neglected girl who finds solace in her bizarre doll, Betsy, only to discover its malevolent influence.

Fixed Frequency: A dark exploration of adolescent mischief gone horribly wrong, where a group of teenagers prank families by hacking into baby monitors—until they encounter something truly sinister on the other end of the line.

The creators of Tales from the Void have masterfully adapted these stories for the screen, pulling from the most viral and terrifying posts on the r/NoSleep subreddit, a community of over 18 million users that has become a hub for horror fans and writers alike. Loschaivo spent two years combing through thousands of stories, curating the most haunting and impactful for this anthology series.

As part of the festival experience, each episode will be followed by a post-show discussion with the original authors of the r/NoSleep stories, moderated by David Cummings, creator of The No Sleep Podcast, which has been downloaded over 300 million times globally.

For those who grew up on anthologies like Goosebumps, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and Tales from the Crypt, Tales from the Void offers a nostalgic yet distinctly adult experience. The series is expected to make waves when it premieres in the UK next year, but horror fans attending Grimmfest have the exclusive opportunity to catch it first.
