‘The Freaks of Fancy’ Darkest Secrets Revealed in Festival Premiere
Elliott Léon’s independent gothic horror, The Freaks of Fancy, is set to make a chilling debut at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024 in just a matter of days. This world premiere marks a significant milestone for the film, which was shot across the scenic landscapes of the Lake District, featuring locations in Kendal and Bowness. The movie, filmed with a silent movie aesthetic, blends psychological terror with surreal gore and is steeped in the atmosphere of 1920s art deco.

Set in 1927, The Freaks of Fancy tells the unsettling tale of four medical graduates invited to an island mansion by their mentor, the controversial Dr. Reed Wakefield. What begins as a weekend retreat quickly descends into a nightmare as Wakefield’s experiments unleash terrifying consequences. The film’s cast, including Rachel Brownstein, Gordon Lawson, Holly Lovelady, and Matthew Jackman, delivers powerful performances that bring this twisted adult fairytale to life.
Léon, a native of the Lake District, has a knack for utilising the area’s haunting beauty in his work. His previous film, Humps, explored the mysteries of Windermere and the legendary creature known as Bownessie. Now, with The Freaks of Fancy, Léon continues to draw from the rich, gothic landscapes of Cumbria, creating a film that is as visually stunning as it is disturbing.
This screening at FrightFest, the UK’s premier horror and fantasy film festival, is the film’s largest and most prestigious showing yet. Set to take place at London’s Odeon Luxe cinema on Friday, August 23rd, The Freaks of Fancy will be a highlight of the festival, offering audiences a taste of the Lake District’s eerie charm in the heart of the capital.

For Léon and his team, this premiere is not just a chance to showcase their work but also an opportunity to put Cumbria on the cinematic map, highlighting the region’s potential as a backdrop for future film projects. With its blend of gothic horror, surrealist satire, and a haunting score, The Freaks of Fancy is looking to offer something a little different to the festival’s attendees.
