The Blair Rabbit Project Makes 25th Anniversary Home Video Debut

The Blair Rabbit Project

In an unexpected twist that will excite horror film parody fans and nostalgia seekers, Phantom Pain Films has announced the release of the once-lost 1990s parody film The Blair Rabbit Project. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the film will make its debut on Blu-ray and VHS on July 23, available exclusively through the Future Video label on Future-Video.tv. Additionally, theatrical screenings across North America are set to be organised in collaboration with the American Genre Film Archive, with dates to be announced.

Conceived during the opening weekend of the cult classic The Blair Witch Project in 1999, The Blair Rabbit Project was the brainchild of writer and director Kerry Prior, best known for The Revenant. Despite its initial setback and mysterious disappearance from the public eye, the film has managed to secure a dedicated, albeit niche, following through bootleg VHS copies. Reflecting on the film’s tumultuous journey, Prior commented, “Due to the tragicomic history of the movie, The Blair Rabbit Project has been a ghost that has haunted me for years. In spite of, or perhaps because of the drama that suddenly stymied its release 25 years ago, it managed to get a passionate, if small, cult following on bootleg VHS! Now, with the release from Future Video, I hope a wider audience will embrace it for what it is: a true lost, but now found, Found Footage movie.”

The film’s premise, an ingenious parody of its namesake, follows two bumbling individuals and a hired actress who venture into the woods to shoot a documentary about rabbits. Predictably, chaos ensues, and their footage, discovered 25 years later, chronicles their absurd ordeal. The official logline teases, “In October of 1999, two idiots and some actress they hired disappeared in the woods while shooting a documentary about rabbits. Twenty-five years later, their footage was found. The Blair Rabbit Project is the account of their ordeal.”

The home video release promises to be a treasure trove for fans and collectors. The Blu-ray edition is packed with exclusive content, including the first episode of The Adam and Kerry Show, deleted scenes, and the official trailer. For those with a penchant for nostalgia, the VHS version, aptly named the “Dung Bunny” edition, comes with a unique “I Brake for Dung Bunnies” bumper sticker, encapsulating the quirky humour that defines the film.

Fans can pre-order their copies now at Future-Video.tv, ensuring they secure a piece of cinematic history. The anticipation surrounding the release is palpable, as it marks a significant milestone for a film that has long lingered in obscurity.

The announcement has is likely to spark excitement among horror parody fans. The blend of satire, found footage, and 90s nostalgia positions The Blair Rabbit Project as a must-watch for those who appreciate the era’s unique charm and humour. With its impending release, the film is poised to captivate a new generation of viewers while rekindling fond memories for those who remember its original, albeit brief, emergence.
