Horror Maestro Mike Flanagan to Revive ‘The Exorcist’ for Blumhouse

Acclaimed horror director Mike Flanagan is set to direct a new film in The Exorcist franchise for Blumhouse and Morgan Creek. This announcement marks Flanagan’s fourth collaboration with Blumhouse, following his work on Oculus, Hush, and Ouija: Origin of Evil. The news comes after the mixed reception of The Exorcist: Believer and shifts the franchise’s direction significantly.
Flanagan, known for his successful adaptations of Stephen King’s works such as Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, as well as his popular TV series including The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass, will write, direct, and produce this new installment. Unlike its predecessor, this film will not be a sequel but rather a fresh story set within the Exorcist universe.
Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse, expressed his enthusiasm about Flanagan’s involvement, praising his unique voice and vision that have made significant contributions to the horror genre. “Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans, and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it,” said Blum.

The film will also see the collaboration of Trevor Macy, producing alongside Flanagan through their respective production companies, Intrepid Pictures and Red Room Pictures. David Robinson, Chairman and CEO of Morgan Creek, which retains the rights to The Exorcist, also expressed his excitement, stating, “I think his vision for this franchise is going to stun audiences worldwide.”
Flanagan’s involvement signifies a bold new direction for the franchise, which previously aimed for a trilogy helmed by David Gordon Green, known for his work on the recent Halloween films. This plan was put on hold following the lukewarm reception and box office performance of The Exorcist: Believer, which grossed $136.2 million worldwide.
Flanagan’s deep admiration for The Exorcist and his proven track record in horror make him a fitting choice for revitalising the series. “The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honour to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan stated.
The collaboration between Flanagan, Blumhouse, and Morgan Creek is expected to bring a compelling and chilling new chapter to the iconic franchise.
