‘Fresh’ Serves Up Horror with a Side of Satire on Disney+

Disney+ has further enriched its catalogue with the addition of Fresh, a horror thriller that seamlessly melds suspense with dark humor, which made its exclusive debut under the Star banner in the UK and Ireland on March 4, 2022.
Directed by Mimi Cave in her first feature-length venture and scripted by Lauryn Kahn, the film has already made waves at its Sundance Film Festival premiere on January 20th, 2022, for its innovative approach to the horror genre, seamlessly blending suspense, horror, and satire. Produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick under the Hyperobject Industries banner, the film represents a bold new direction for horror cinema, challenging conventions and setting new benchmarks for storytelling.

The narrative centers around Noa, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones of Normal People fame, who, disenchanted with the digital dating scene, finds herself drawn to the charismatic Steve, portrayed by Sebastian Stan, known for his roles in the Captain America series and I, Tonya. After a whirlwind first date, Noa accepts Steve’s invitation for a weekend getaway, only to uncover his dark, culinary secrets that thrust her into a nightmarish ordeal.
The film boasts a strong supporting cast including Jojo T. Gibbs, Charlotte Le Bon, Andrea Bang, and Dayo Okeniyi, who all contribute to the film’s compelling and eerie atmosphere. The film’s aesthetic is masterfully crafted by a team of industry veterans including cinematographer Pawel Pogorzelski, known for Hereditary and Midsommar, and composer Alex Somers, who adds an eerily atmospheric score to heighten the tension.

Since captivating Sundance audiences, it’s hoped that Fresh will be well placed to make a significant impact on Disney+’s viewership in the UK and Ireland. As part of the expansive offerings under the Star banner, the film is expected to attract a wide audience, eager for high-quality, innovative horror narratives.
